Present Day

Elena and Matt were jogging, obviously to keep themselves healthy and stronger for what was to come. They didn't know what was to come, especially being fragile human's like themselves - it was extremely tough to escape from situations that would not be in a usual human life. Elena pressed the device on her arm, signalling that she had already ran around her neighbourhood twice.

"What are we running, a marathon?" The blue-eyed boy joked, attempting to catch up with the doppelgänger. Elena almost laughed - and he was supposed to be the quarter back.

"If you can't keep up." She gestured to the Mystic Grill with a smile, but he jogged beside her and kept at her pace. The wind was blowing through her hair, pushing it out of her face. She needed time to think of the events of the week, but she had to keep denying things that she wanted to fix.

"Elena, you can't outrun your problems." Matt admitted, his eyes finally drifting to his ex-girlfriends face. Her smile faltered but she continued to jog. Matt was the only person who knew her in ways that Bonnie and Caroline didn't, he had been her boyfriend once - and she really did think she would grow old with him. But growing old... It seemed that being with Stefan wouldn't be an option anymore. Now she wasn't with Stefan, the door was wide open. She knew it wouldn't be with Matt, even though they owed it to themselves. Matt grew to a slow walk but the doppelgänger kept running.

"Though it looks like you're gonna try," He began to walk towards her but she continued to sprint down the pathway, "I talked to Bonnie!" Over the last couple of days, the witch had been going through a traumatic experience. To save the Originals from dying and tearing Elena's throat out, they had to sever the link between Esther and the ancestors; there was no plan. But then they knew what they had to do, they had to kill Bonnie's mother - Abby Bennett, but they turned her into a vampire instead.

Elena stopped in her tracks and spun around to face Matt, "What did she say?"

"They're at her mom's house," The blonde sighed and paced towards the doppelgänger, "Abby is going to complete the transition." Elena smiled weakly, knowing that Bonnie would need her mother but not like this - not half-dead.

"She decided to become a vampire?" Elena almost gasped, knowing this was not a subject that Bonnie's mother would decide on lightly. It would take hours of concentration and dedication.

"Yeah. Caroline's gonna help her through it. Teach her to control it and stuff." Matt explained, avoiding Elena's eyes. She knew it was her fault, but she didn't want to over exaggerate.

"Did Bonnie say-" The Donovan shook his head, knowing what she was going to ask, "Is there anything I can do?"

"She knows it's not your fault, Elena, she's just upset." He attempted to explain, but Elena knew otherwise. Bonnie knew that everybody would put Elena before anybody else, because everybody loves her. She had barely gotten a chance with her mother before she was turned into a monster.

"Damon turned her mom into a vampire to save my life," She placed a hand on her forehead and sighed, "It's absolutely my fault."

"You're gonna make me run more, aren't you?" Matt questioned with a smile, avoiding the truth like a wrecking ball. He wanted to be supportive but he knew he couldn't, not right now. They were the problem.

Swigging his bourbon, Damon kept his mind focussed on his phone. Alaric had been arrested for murder, but he didn't know how to get him out of it. He couldn't just compel Caroline's mother, it would be too much effort. Plus, nobody would approve anyway. Suddenly he heard bashing, coming from the stairs and he perched his head to the side in discomfiture. Then Eleanor appeared, two suitcases behind her as they crashed down the stairs. He placed down his drink and rushed over to her.
