John's pov
I woke up, earlier than I'd expected. It was a breakday, niether Alex nor I had classes. I looked at the digital clock. 5:45. How in the heck did I manage to wake up this early? I groaned, earning a small giggle from Alex. I looked down at him, his eyes still closed.
"Sorry did I wake you?" I said sympathetically. He shook his head and nuzzled into the crook of my neck."Why are you up this early?" He asked me.
"To be honest with you, I have no idea. Hell, I was planning to sleep till lunchtime..." I trailed off as he started giggling again. I wrapped my arms around his middle, pulling him as close as possible to my body. He rested his head on my chest and began tracing nonsense shapes on my skin.
"Hey, Lex?" I asked.
"Hm?"
"I don't want to make you uncomfortable or anything, but...last night, when you said I'm the only one you have left...what did you mean by that?"I felt him tense up a little at my question, his eyes filled with fear. I regretted even bringing up the subject, I could see it made him very uncomfortable. But before I could apologize, he started talking.
"Remember the hurricane I told you about?" He asked, avoiding eye contact.
"Yeah." I replied.
"Well, a while ago, I used to live with my mom, my dad, and my brother, James, in the Caribbean. My mom had locks of dark, curly hair and caramel skin. She was so beautiful..." He smiled sadly."My dad was strong and independent, always standing up for my family. And James, my brother, was always trying to make more money for us, he worked on the sugar farms with my dad. One day, they came home with a small stuffed lion and a wooden pendant on a copper chain. Together, with savings they'd put away, my dad and brother saved up enough for them. My mother always called me her, 'petit lion', or little lion in english, so my dad thought the stuffed animal was perfect." He took a necklace out from underneath his shirt and showed it to me. It was a wooden rose pendant on a copper chain...
"My dad always compared my mother's beauty to a rose, and thought it was perfect for her. It's handmade from copper wood, and the chain was imported from Europe." He said.
"Aww, Alex, that's so sweet! I'd love it so much if I was able to meet your family." I smiled at him, but he looked like he was on the verge of crying.
"Lexi?" I asked."That was when I was about eight. When I was ten, my dad left us. He was debt ridden. We were low on money and food, we were struggling to survive as it was. Two years later, my mother and I got sick. Very sick. James tried to help, but there was little he could do. We went on like that for about a week, getting worse every day. One night, my mother, she-she passed away..." His voice cracked a bit.
"Oh my god Alex, I'm so sorry, I had no idea..." I said to him."For some reason, I survived. I got better. Then the hurricane came, James drowned. I was forced to move in with my cousin. He committed suicide about a month or two later. I was so helpless, I just, decided to write everything down then and there. Every single thing that had happenned to me. Somehow, word got around that I was this fantastic writer, and my town was completely impressed with my story and my writing. They passed a plate around, total strangers, moved to kindness by my story. It ended up being enough for a one way ticket to New York. I got a full scholarship, and, now I'm here." Silent tears fell down his face, mine as well.
I engulfed him in a huge hug, clutching his body as he sobbed into my shoulder. I ran my hand through his hair, whispering comforting things into his ears.
"J-John, there's something really important my mother told me, right before the night she died." He said.
"What did she say?" I asked.
"She said that there would be an angel to love me when it seemed like everything was gone. She said that he would be graceful and beautiful, with a voice like silk and a face that had stars on his cheeks like the night sky." He said, pulling away from the hug.
"...stars?" I whispered."I thought she was trying to make me feel better because she knew she was going to die, or her fever was making her say things, but I know now, the angel she was talking about was you." He said, cupping my cheek. I blushed, feeling blessed that Alex's mother would trust me to love her son.
"...oh my god..." I said, realizing how crazy fate was. Alex nodded his head and began crying again.I hugged him and laid back onto the bed. I stroked his hair, placing kisses on his forehead. I started muttering apologies.
"I'm sorry Alex. I'm sorry for all the crap that's happened to you, I'm sorry I left you last night, I'm so, so, so sorry."
"It's okay, John, it's okay... I forgive you. And, there's nothing to be done about my past..." He said, crying softly. Suddenly, I blurted out something that had been stuck in my chest since the day I met him.
"I love you so, so much. Do you know that? I love you and I will never stop loving you." I said. His eyes widened as he looked up at me.
"You...you do?" He asked, his eyes puffy but hopeful.
"Of course I do, why wouldn't I?" I said, leaning down and kissing his nose.
"I love you too...more than you could ever know, mon ange gardien." He said.Wow, I don't know about all you readers, but wow, I cried while writing that. Thank you all so much for reading my story~
