I felt the dirt crunch beneath my feet as I walked North, the direction of the stump. The stump was a special place to me, and a special place to the Wolves of the Eternal Woods. It was a place with history, a place that the wolves never wanted to let go. The stump was where Gale's death took place, and where he was buried. The Wolves tried not to wander too far away from the stump, because whenever they were close by, they felt as if they could feel their past leader's presence with them, encouraging them, strengthening them.
I walked around the large tree that I had no idea what it's kind was, only that the nuts it grew were edible, and delicious, and from there, the stump was only around 10 metres away from my grasp. Some of the Wolves were there, the others must be out hunting since in turning into night. I recognised Sheba, she was the oldest Wolf left in their pack, too old to hunt anyways. Her grey ears pricked forwad when she recognized my scent and noticed my appearance, she wasn't on as much guard as she normally is.
Playing below the stump and running around rock that Sheba lay resting on, were the five wolf pups that had been born three months ago. Silver, Fang and Kari. They were still cute as ever though, still working out how to not trip over their feet and how to put the brakes on. There was their mother, Lana, whose white and grey head was resting on her grey paws, watching her puppies intently.
And there was also Shadow. He was the darkest wolf in their pack. He wasn't black, but his gray fur was so dark that it could almost pass as black. When he noticed me he jumped up onto his four paws and trotted up to me quickly, his tail wagging.
I bent down towards the ground so that I was crouching, balancing on my two feet with my knees bent, and petted his head. "Hey buddy, how are things going?"
"The usual," Shadow replied passivly as he nudged his head closer to me, thoroughly enjoying his rub.
I couldn't speak to the Wolves like you'd think they can. They don't open their mouthes and speak. It's a matter of reading minds and requires lots of concentration. I'm best at communicating with the Wolves in my own wolf form, or else I could get a head-ache from too much focusing.
"How's the hunting?"
Shadow looked down at the ground and let out a low whimper. "Not so great... The Deer aren't around in these parts very much now, and Rabbits aren't exactly big enough for a hungry pack to feed on,"
I let out a long sigh. At least he was still quite round, as in in a healthy state and shape. My head began to throb so I decided to shift. It took me a few seconds to shift, but it also took up a lot of concentration too, but at least now I'll be able to talk with Shadow much more effectively and easily.
"They'll come back, Eternel Deer can only feed on other grass apart from Eter grass for so long," I remind him.
Shadow growls. "They've been cross-breeding. With the Wyoming Deer," He snaps accusingly. I have to calm him down so he doesn't get so worked up.
"That's not good," I say, but wanting to bite my own head off as soon as it came out. Of course it wasn't good. If Shadow were human, he would of frowned and raised an eyebrow by the look he just gave me. "Sorry," I mutter.
Sheba wags her tail when I look up at her and if I were human right now, I would be grinning at her. Shadow saw the look on my face and stalked off back to where Lana lay, and he sat down a meter away from her. So I decided to approach Sheba.
"How's it going Sheba?" I ask leaping up onto the rock next to her, getting a whiff of her fammiliar scent and the scent of the greenery from the trees and grass, it wa a slightly dusty sent too.
Sheba lifted her head up to look at me, her eyes sparkled. She always looked happy to see me, they all did. And I was always happy to see them. They were my second family. No, my first extended family. They were like my siblings, or like my cousins. They knew everything about me, and I knew most things about them.
"What Shadow told you I guess, doesn't bother me though, as long as the pups get enough" She says, her gentle eyes staring into mine with a dash of hope.
I felt my inner wolf smile, if thats even possible. If only humans were as Wolves are.
