XX – Two Hunters and an Ex-Angel

I don't remember falling unconscious.

When I wake, I panic. I've got things stuck in my skin, machines hovering near the bed I'm stuck in. I've been changed out of my clothes, and my vision isn't quite normal yet.

"Don't take those out, they're to help you."

Alona is near my bedside. If I could, I would throw my arms around her and hug her. I smile at her, but she doesn't return the favor. She glares down at me, like a mother scolding her child. My smile disappears.

"You heard me."

She nods. "I did. You're a fool, Vera."

I snort. "I didn't ask for my Grace to go, Alona. I—"

"I heard whispers of what happened."

"Do you have it?"

"No, I don't. I should let you suffer for what you've done."

"Some friend you are."

"Don't act like such a child, Vera. This is serious, what we're doing."

"Yes, I know," I retort angrily. "And I can't do my part if I don't have my Grace!"

Alona puts her hands on the bed, leaning in towards me. Her eyes look darker than normal, and they frighten me. For the first time ever, she intimidates me. "Were you ever doing your part, Vera? Running off with hunters who have an on-call demon at their disposal and going on their adventures. What do you think you were achieving by that? You weren't helping us prevent seals from being broken! Angels have died, Vera!"

"I'm fully aware, thank you."

"Clearly you're not." She backs off a bit. "Perhaps if I put you in front of their corpses you'll comprehend the severity of this problem. It seems you've forgotten how disastrous this can be for the world if we fail."

"You told the Winchesters where I was. You located me," I stray from topic.

Alona looks annoyed. "Yes, I told them. Yes, I gave them direction to you. I wasn't going to save you. I'm not going to anymore. This is the final favor that I did for you, Vera. If you want someone to help you, enlist the Winchesters, since you favor them over your own kind."

I look at her, aghast. "How can you say that?"

"Was it always a wish for you, Vera, to want to be human?"

"No! Just because I've been around them, it, it doesn't mean that I want to be one!" I look at her wildly. "What has gotten into you?"

"You drove this wedge between us."

"Alona!" I yell, but she's already vanished with a flap of her wings. Wings that I can no longer see nor hear, but I know that's how she left.

I sit back in the bed, thinking back to the events in the motel room. I think about how Alona has been acting. We've been fine before. She's tolerated my actions. What's changed? What's really going on with her?

"Sleeping angel is awake!" says Dean Winchester as he, followed by Sam, walk inside my room. I just blink at him. "That bad, huh?"

"It was totally that bad," Sam chimes. He hands me a bag that smells heavily of grease and new smells I've never picked up on before. "We figured we'd rescue you from hospital food. Ran out and got you the good stuff."
