Before I begin, this chapter and the chapters that follow are purely a work of fiction and have nothing to do with the epic and IS NOT INTENDED TO HURT ANYBODY'S RELIGIOUS OR CULTURAL BELIEVES & SENTIMENTS.

The next morning everyone was assembled on the battlefield to perform Karna's last rites. Duryodhana was crying profusely and was inconsolable. He was pale and looked like he had no reason to live. The Pandava brothers were inconsolable too. The whole night they were cursing themselves for taunting and humiliating Karna his whole life for not knowing who his parents were and for not being a person of royal blood while in reality, he was the noblest of them all, a compassionate, kind and generous king who took great joy in helping others. Kunti was also present and was surprised when Duryodhana did not object to her presence. Everyone else was surprised too that is everyone except Krishna who knew exactly what the Kaurava prince was thinking.

Finally, it was time to light up the funeral pyre. Ashwathama took up the burning torch and handed it over to Duryodhana. The Pandavas who knew that Duryodhana had the right to do Karna's last rites more than they did, kept quiet and did not object but to their shock instead of lighting the pyre, Duryodhana took a few steps towards them and stopped when he was face to face with Yudhishthira " I want you to do it" he said in a shaking voice.

A shocked Yudhishthira stood rooted in his spot. Duryodhana continued " Karna is a true friend he stood by me and supportedvme all his life. He was the only person who saw the little good in me and tried to bring it out to lead me in the path of dharma. When I refused to follow his advice instead of leaving me he remained loyal and fought this war against his own brothers I can never repay Karna for all the things he has done for me but I want to at least give him the recognition that he has yearned for all his life. I have seen Karna suffer his entire life because he did not know who his parents were. he always felt unwanted and lonely and wanted to know who he was. I made him a king and he ruled his kingdom in an exemplary way, treated his people with kindness and compassion he was the best king in the world but this society never recognised or treated him as such just because he was not a royal by birth and today if you do his final rites it will put an end to all the taunting and humiliation and, tell the world loud and clear that he is a Kshatriya and not a low-class commoner. please do this and at least let his soul rest in peace" Saying so the Kaurava prince collapsed heavily onto the ground  and broke  into tears. He could not hold it any longer the fact that his dear friend was not with him anymore shattered his heart. Yudhistra looked at Krishna and he nodded in agreement so Yudhishtra lit up the funeral pyre and did the final rites

Everyone was shocked and taken aback but the most shocked of them all was Bheema who had always believed that Duryodhana had no good qualities in him and that he was not capable of loving anyone unless there was some kind of benefit for him. Now seeing him so heartbroken and devastated for the loss of Karna he realised what a great friend Duryodhana was and there was a newfound respect for Duryodhana in his heart.
