A sigh escaped my lips as I watched my card tower fall apart onto the floor. Boredom has latched me in itself once more. I sighed again as I stood from the ground, making my way down the familiar wooden stair-case.

"Mama!"

My voice echoed down the corridor, a head peeping out the door.

"Yes?"

"I'm bored."

"You can always do the washing up, or mop the floor. Or you can bake a cake."

"I'm bored but I don't want to move and put effort into doing something."

Mama sighed, shaking her head, smiling slightly.

"You're just a lazy bum, just like your father."

My head shot up; she rarely ever mentioned Papa.

"Mama, when is Papa going to return?"

She hesitated, contemplating whether she should tell me.

"Come on Mama. I'm old enough to understand! After all, he is MY Papa. Don't I deserve to have an idea of where he is or what he's doing?" I pleaded, something I never do.

Her eyes softened at my desperate state as she gave in.

"You're father is gone, Gadian. He is no longer alive. But he did leave you a message that I was ordered to give to you when you come of age." Her eyes filled up with tears, threatening to stain her cheeks.

Any normal person would've cried at the thought of their Papa being dead, but I didn't. Not even a single tear swam in my eyes. You can't blame me. I never knew him. He's like a stranger. According to Mama, Papa left our family when I was a baby, too young to comprehend what was happening. He had an important job to do, something to do with being a "loyal servant" in the Enchanted Forest. I've heard many tales of the Enchanted Forest and when I asked my Mother to tell me stories in detail about it, she'd be stricken with worry and give a lame excuse that she was busy and couldn't tell me.

"M-Mama... Did Papa die in the... Enchanted Forest?" I eyed her crying form, cursing myself, under my breath, for stuttering.

"Y-Yes" She was having difficulty speaking since she was crying so hard. Instead of walking away, as I usually would, I lightly made my way over to her, awkwardly cradling her in my arms. After all, I'm the one who questioned her about my father.

"It's okay Mama. Even though I never got to know my Papa, I'm sure he was a great man."

I felt her head nod as she attempted to stop her cries. Mama broke away from my embrace and walked across the living room and returned with a small box in her hands.

She held out the box and arms-length, hinting that I should take it.

"In this box has a letter from your father. Not one creature knows what is written in the letter, except your father. He wrote this letter for you."

I thanked her, took the box from her hands and returned to my bedroom, closing the door behind me.

Hesitantly, I gently lifted the lid and inside, as Mama had said, was a letter, enclosed with a worn out green string.

I held my breath as I pulled the string, watching it fall onto my lap as the letter unfolded slightly.

With shaking fingers, I opened up the letter and read the words written by my father.
