A N D I E

Seven Years Later: 2008

It happened in seventh grade.

David and I were at our friend Dom's 12th birthday party. It was one of those parties where the parents irresponsibly left a bunch of literal children by themselves, hoping that they don't destroy their home.

The two of us were quietly sitting in the corner of the room, talking about random stuff that had happened at school. Suddenly, Dom stood up on the coffee table in the center of the room, announcing that everyone needed to sit in a circle for spin the bottle/seven minutes in heaven. David and I rolled our eyes, staying where we were as neither of us had any intentions of playing.

As everyone gathered in a circle, Dom noticed that we remained seated, and decided to call us out for it.

"What?! You guys aren't gonna play?!" He yells, making a scene, and gaining everyone's attention. Our classmates began to tease as Dom continued trying to get us to partake in their game.

David and I looked at each other, giving one another a knowing, annoyed look as we stood up from our seats. Our classmates cheered mockingly as we reluctantly sat together in the circle. Dom grabbed an empty soda bottle, and we began playing.

Some time had passed, but it had yet to be David or I's turn. Dom got to go make out with Kim, whom at the time, was his dream girl. As another couple finishes their turn, Dom turns to David and I, a mischievous smirk on his face. Oh no. Dom hands David the bottle.

"Your turn, Dobrik." Dom grins, David takes the bottle from his hand, and glances at me before spinning it.

My heart began to race as the bottle spun. I didn't want it to land on me, but I also didn't want it to land on anyone else. The bottle began to slow down, and my stomach dropped as it landed on me. David and I look at each other, our cheeks burning a bright red.

Everyone begins to "Ooooh" at David and I, making the situation even more awkward. David stands up, reaching his hand out so he could help me up. I grab it, and he lifts me up before we begin walking towards the designated room. We close the door behind us, and sat on the bed, facing each other.

"Uhhm, so what do we do now?" I ask awkwardly, avoiding eye contact.

"Listen, Andie, if you don't want to kiss or whatever, I don't care. You're my best friend." David says sincerely, making me smile. There's a moment of silence between the two of us before a I speak up.

"D-Did you want to?" I mumble quietly, looking around the room to avoid eye contact.

"What?"

"Did you want to, like, kiss me?" I ask, my heart pounding as the words leave my mouth.

"I mean, did you want to kiss me?" He asks, his cheeks burning a bright red.

"Alright! Let's not make things weird, okay?" I begin, laughing a little. "We're best friends, we can kiss, right?"

David nods, laughing a little, and scooting closer to me. Our legs overlap each other as we sat cross-legged, facing one another. We sat in silence for a while, neither of us knowing what to do.

"Did you want me to kiss you?" I ask, David shrugs.

"Isn't the guy supposed to kiss the girl?"

"Well apparently not if the guy's being super awkward about it!" I laugh, shoving his shoulder playfully.

"Shut up! I've never done this before." David laughs.

"I know you haven't, neither have I."

"I know..."

As the silence washes over us, I take this as an opportunity, and cupped David's face in my hand. I brought my face closer to his as he began leaning in. David's eyes close as we get closer to one another, as do mine. Our lips touch, making my stomach feel all weird. Like, I was going to throw up, but in a good way?

The small peck deepened slightly as we both leaned in closer. Suddenly, I feel David's tongue trying to invade my mouth. I jump apart from him quickly.

"I said kiss me, not stick your tongue down my esophagus!" I yell, laughing, and wiping my mouth.

"Sorry, I got excited!" He laughs, playfully raising his arms in defense. It gets silent for a second, the only thing to be heard was the music from the other room.

"How much longer do we have to be in here for?" David asks, I look over at the alarm clock behind him. Jeez, we've only been in here for two minutes.

"Five minutes..." I sigh.

"So... did you hear about what happened in third period today?!" David asks, changing the subject, and making me laugh a little.

I'm so lucky to have a best friend like him...
