He ran down the stairs fingers skimming the banister along the way. He was in a rush to get somewhere, but where. "Well anywhere but here I guess", he thought. He stopped at the end of the stairs looking back at his apartment. It was slightly messy for one person but , he had just been so busy lately.
He grabbed his coat off the coat rack standing near by. It was an awfully chilly night and he couldn't afford a trip to the doctors at the point. Keys in his hand he opened the door revealing a car covered in ice. "Aw no", he angrily waved his arms around, "I guess I'll have to walk it's not too far." The cafe was only about a block or two away, he had always been to lazy to walk though.
He ran back inside to grab a scarf and some gloves, since he wouldn't have the feeling of the heating from his car. He walked down the nearly empty sidewalk of the city. Most people were out at clubs getting drunk and partying, and he was well walking to a cafe at nearly one in the morning.
He walked a little farther until he finally arrived at his destination. "Hmm, maybe I should walk here from now on", he whispered aloud to himself. There was only one other person in the late night cafe besides the staff.
He was a tall and handsome man. He sat alone awaiting someone, drinking a dark coffee. His coat was off and he was wearing a dark blue sweater with a pair of slightly distressed jeans.
The other man walked in and shedded his coat walking over to the counter to order. He placed his order and walked over to the table where the other man was sitting. He rubbed the bridge of his nose nervously.
"Jamie what took you so long to get here", the other man said exasperated.
"Sorry my car had ice on it so I decided to walk", Jamie replied still nervous.
Someone called for Jamie indicating that his order was ready. He stood up quickly and rushed over to the woman to get his latte, he doesn't really like his coffee black. The woman looked him over.
"What's someone like you doing here so late at night?"
"Oh, well I came to meet up with someone." He blushed, the redness slowly creeping up his neck. Not knowing what else to say he rushed back to the other man awkwardly. "So um what was it you needed me for?"
"Well you see..", he trailed off. It was very out of character for him to get nervous. "There is this guy that I like."
"Wait", Jamie held up his hands indicating him to stop, "you're gay?"
"Yeah, what about it?"
"Oh not there is nothing wrong with that Riley I just didn't know."
"Ok so I was wondering if you might want to go out to dinner sometime?"
"What?" Jamie sat there dumbfounded. His best friend just asked him out, on a date?
"What do you mean what?"
"I uh sorry I um I wasn't expecting that."
"So would you?"
"Uh well um I'm sorry can you give me some time to think?" After that Jamie got up and ran out. He didn't even put on his coat or scarf and ran all the way home.
He arrived wheezing in front of his apartment. He unlocked his door still out of breath and stepped inside. He didn't even bother hanging up his coat or scarf, he just threw them into a heap on the floor. He slowly walked up the stairs, fingers skimming the banister.
Sitting down on his bed he looked at his ringing phone. It had been buzzing and beeping for the past thirty minutes. He walked over with an answer ready to tell the truth. He picked up the phone going through his contacts till he found Riley.
He sat there for a few seconds wondering if he should push the call button. Finally working up the courage to call he pressed the call button. On the second ring he picked up. There was a bit of silence.
"Yes"
