"Let me get a proper look at you my darling." Kyoko took a few steps back then said, "You look like you've lost weight. Have you been eating properly?"
Mimi stifled an eye roll and as she thought and it starts, just hold your tongue, smile and put up with it.
"Of course I have. Stop being so silly," Hatori replied coldly, then looked at his father and arched his eyebrow in silent protest.
"How was the drive up here?" Chojiro asked, as he walked over to the group totally relaxed in his Hawaiian shirt and navy Bermuda shorts. "I hope there wasn't too much traffic; you know how crazy the roads can get during the festival."
"The drive was fine father." Hatori paused then looked at his mother. "What is this business about us staying in the main house? I specifically said I wanted to stay at my house."
Mimi slipped her hand in his and gave it a little squeeze when she saw the strain on his face. Hatori had told Mimi he wanted to stay in his house because he knew that having a little space from the main house would help and act as a haven for her if things got too hard.
"Oh, I just thought it would be so much nicer if the two of you stayed here in the main house," Kyoko said innocently, and Mimi could've cut the bullshit with a knife. "That way I can get to know Mimi better." Kyoko gave Mimi a fake smile not even trying to make it look real. "Besides your house needs a few repairs on the roof and we couldn't get anyone out in time to fix it. If you had let me know you were coming for a visit sooner I would've had it fixed in time."
Hatori's hand tightening around Mimi's made her look up at him and she could tell he was raging inside and it was only a matter of moments before he exploded. She sighed and her shoulders hunched slightly as this weekend was getting off to a catastrophic start.
"Let me show you to your rooms. I hope you don't mind that I put you two in separate rooms. It's just your grandmother insisted on it and I thought it would make things easier for everyone to just go along with her request," Kyoko said as sickly sweet as honey.
Mimi could see the topic of sleeping arrangements was still grating on Hatori's nerves and rubbed her thumb across his hand, then looked at Chojiro and said, "Kanzaki-san, I brought you some of the mochi that you liked so much," Mimi handed Chojiro the large tin she had been carrying under her left arm.
Chojiro's eyes lit up and he said, "You remembered. Thank you, Mimi; I am going to really enjoy these."
Kyoko pressed her lips together in disapproval then commented through clenched teeth, "Dear do you really think you should be eating that? You know you have to watch what you eat."
Kyoko went to take the tin; Chojiro stepped back and said, "If you think your taking these away from me, dear, you have another think coming. And since when has mochi become bad for your health, crazy woman." He looked at Hatori and Mimi then said, "Now if you will excuse me I am going to enjoy these in peace." Chojiro promptly walked out of the room.
Kyoko narrowed her eyes and pressed her lips together even tighter and gave Mimi a look that could've frozen the fiery depths of hell. Mimi felt a cold shiver go up her spine as she saw the flames of hate burn in Kyoko's eyes.
Hatori stepped in front of Mimi and gave his mother a look that told her to stop then said in a tight voice, "Are you going to show us to our rooms or shall I ask one of the maids to."
Kyoko's face instantly changed and she smiled, and then replied, "Of course, darling, I would be delighted to. Now, Hatori, I figured you could stay in your old room. Why don't you go up there now and make sure everything is the way you want it. I will show Mimi to her room.''
"I'm sure that everything is fine with my room I don't need to see it," he said and Mimi could tell he didn't want to leave her alone with his mother.
"Hatori, I insist that you check, you know with the majority of the Kanzaki family is here, the maids are a bit rushed off their feet. If you wait until later to check and then find there is something wrong with your room you are just going to make more work for everyone. Go on I promise to take good care of Mimi," Kyoko said putting on a sweet face as if butter wouldn't melt in her mouth.
Hatori whispered under breath, "That's exactly what I am afraid of." Then said louder, "Fine I'll go check. What room is Mimi staying in, mother?"
Kyoko looked innocent as she said, "Unfortunately because the house is so full and you really didn't give me any notice you two were coming, I had to put Mimi in the ground floor room on the west wing."
Before Hatori had any time to respond Kyoko hooked her arm around Mimi's arm and pulled her out of the room. "I'm sure you will love this room. It has a double aspect and great views of the estate and most importantly it's nice and quiet." Mimi felt like she was being stitched up.
Her face and spirits dropped when they arrived at the room and her suspicions were painfully confirmed. The room was lovely but the bed she was meant to sleep in was a child's bed and clearly too small. The room was also cluttered with boxes that took up most of the space in the room. However the cherry on this particularly shitty cake was the room no air conditioning and none of the windows were open. The air was stale and it felt like the ninth circle of hell. The room was roasting and Mimi felt the sweat began to drip down her forehead.
Mimi thought as she walked into the room, so this is what hell really feels like and I have the angel faced devil standing next to me.
Kyoko stopped at the door, gave Mimi a huge fake smile. "I am really sorry about this, it was the only free room we had." Her fake voice riled Mimi up. "Unfortunately the air conditioning in this room is broken but if you open the windows you should get a nice breeze to cool the room down. I will get someone to come and clear away some of these boxes later. Now, if you need anything please don't hesitate to ask one of the maids, I will leave you to get settled in."
Well if Kyoko thinks she's won she can suck on this, because I sure as shit won't give her the satisfaction of seeing she's got to me. "Before you leave, Kanzaki-san, I have a gift for you as well." As Mimi walked over to her suitcase she thought Yeah I have a smack across the face for you. Mimi pulled out a rectangle box that contained a beautiful hand bag. "Ha said you liked this designer, I hope you like it."
Kyoko looked at the wrapped gift without opening it then said, "It's Sama not San," then walked off radiating hostility.
Mimi wanted to scream but managed to choke it down and walked over to the window. She had to use all of her force to yank open the windows. Then with a sigh of defeat she sat on the tiny bed that was underneath the window and leaned out to try and get the most of the cooler air.
