Several years later...

I coughed and spluttered as I fell to the ground on my hands and knees.

"Wha...where am I?" I said before coughing more. I tried to stand, but my limbs were too weak. I heard the sound of doors opening. I craned my neck to spot some figures coming into the room. My vision was very blurry, so I couldn't make out what they were. They grabbed me under the arms and dragged me out the way they came in. I tried to struggle, but I barely moved. I instead tried to take on my surroundings. All I saw was a white blur. Well, that helps. I was taken into a dark room and placed on a squishy surface. Definitely a bed. Cool. Wait, not cool, they're tying down my arms and legs. I once again tried to move but nope. I felt a prick on my arm. Next thing I knew, I was drifting back to sleep.

I woke up once more in the dark room except this time I could actually see clearly. I was also untied. I tried to move and discovered I could. I sprung to my feet and started towards the door. I'm getting out of here. As soon as I opened the door, an alarm started to sound.

"Shit!" I yelled as I started to run. I noticed now that I was still in the same white clothes. Wait...I remember now. I was frozen. How long has it been? It can't have been too long, right?

I saw another door coming. I took it to find after about ten steps, it was a dead end. I turned to go back the way I came in to discover it was now another wall. A rough force underneath my feet caused me to land on the ground. I was definitely moving, so I guess I'm in some sort of truck. In frustration, I punched the wall. I was shocked to find it didn't hurt...so I continued to punch it. It soon gave way...to reveal another wall.

"Son of a bitch," I said. I collapsed to my knees. What has happened? I heard a voice overhead.

"You're stronger than we thought. You will be very useful," it said. It reminded me of Asshole. That gives me hope that it hasn't been too long.

"Hey! Asshole, is that you?! How about you come in here, and we settle that score!" I yelled.

"You must be referring to the man who spoke over the intercom before you were frozen. He is long dead," Asshole #2 said. That hit me hard.

"Define 'long dead'," I said hesitantly.

"You were frozen one thousand years ago today."

I went dead still. One thousand years?! How is that possible?! This means...I'm all alone in the world now. No allies, no friends, no family. Tears welled in my eyes. I bowed my head, hoping they couldn't see my face. My moment was broken when the truck braked hard, and I flew into the front wall. I heard gunfire and started punching the wall again. Suddenly, a hole blew in the wall I was punching. I was thrown backwards and made a dent in the opposite wall. I struggled to get up. Getting thrown around really hurts. I noticed the light coming through the hole made by the explosive. It really hurt my eyes, but I guess that's what happens after one thousand years of being frozen. A figure came into view. It jumped through the hole and approached me.

"What is your full name?" a feminine voice asked.

"Samuel Avery Carson," I answered. She immediately grabbed my arm and pulled me to my feet.

"We need to go," she said, not letting go of my arm. I could make out now that she was wearing a black helmet and black body armor. It seemed a bit strange. I was hesitant to go with her, but then again, I'll take the unknown over this hell. I nodded in response, and we ran out of the truck. I was stumbling around a good bit, but I was keeping pace. My vision finally cleared completely. I took in my surroundings and almost stopped in shock at the sight I was greeted with. This was a city full of dull, gray buildings. The sidewalks were very clean however. People were trudging through the streets. They all seemed so...solemn. This was not the future I imagined. Not at all. Technology didn't seem to be overly advanced. Then again, I guess I knew the world would be going down for the worst, but I imagined total destruction, not some kind of faceless society.
