We cantered into the clearing before the four riders with the mare got there.
"We should go put these guys away." Drake huffed and I nodded as we went to the barn. When the horses were put away we walked outside and sat down.
"Why do you think they caught that mare?" I asked looking at Drake who was drinking a Coke. He shook his shaggy blond hair and shrugged.
"To train her I guess. But I don't see the reason to train a mustang when you got all these perfect horses, I mean sure you get the crazy two year olds and then the new horses like Raja but why do you need a mustang?" Drake's eyebrows furrowed and he looked down at his sun bleached boots.
"Maybe there is something about that mare." I questioned myself.
"As far as I saw the only thing 'special' about that mare was that she was absolutely insane." Drake sighed kicking dirt with his boot.
"I think she's kinda pretty." I sigh thinking of the mare. She was a dapple gray, pretty. Drake looked at me and scratched the back of his head. His hazel green eyes stared into my crystal blue.
"You know uh. You have really pretty eyes." Drake blushed and I giggled.
"Uh Thanks." I blushed. OMG I feel like a pepper, I'm like sweating!
" Hey look here they come with that mare!" Drake called putting his Coke down and standing up, he walked over to the arena where they let the mare go. She bucked and kicked and reared, she was wild.
"Wow, she's stunning." I breathed staring at her as she galloped around the arena. Drake looked at me and mumbled something. I gave him a funny look and he smirked.
"Hey Drake! Come help us with these hay bales!" Someone yelled from next to a truck full of hay. I turned back to the mare and watched her as she slowed to a trot. She held her head and tail high like she was proud of something, maybe she was beta of the herd. Or she was proud that she was the only one taken. I thought why she looked so proud instead of hurt, scared, or angry. She stopped trotting and started to walk around around the arena. She stopped in the middle and lifted her head to the air and let out an ear piercing whinny. I winced as she reared and started to canter around the arena. How are they going to get her in a stall? I shook my head, my mind was going a million miles a minnute. Then something helpful actually popped into my head.
I ran back to the house and into the kitchen. I frantically looked for the fruit bowl, of which had been moved from its usual spot. I found it next to the fridge and grabbed an apple then ran out the door and back to the arena.
I clucked my tongue and the mare's head shot up from the ground of where she had been sniffing and stared at me. I smiled and held out my hand with the apple in it. Bad. Idea. She reared and galloped to the other end of the arena. Shoot. I hope no one saw me do that. I looked around and thankfully everyone was busy. "Shh Shh. It's ok, I'm not going to hurt you." I soothed. Well I kinda already knew she wasn't going to take the apple out of my hand so I tossed the apple to the middle of the arena and watched. She eyed the apple but slowly approached it. I smiled as she took a few more steps until she could eat it. She leaned down and smelled it. The mare lifted her head looked around the bent down and ate the apple in two bites. When the mare had finished she looked around for more. I smiled and walked to barn C.
When I reached the entrance I went to a stall in the back of the barn and opened the door. In the stall stood the sixteen hand tall chestnut quarter horse called Red. I smiled as he sniffed my pockets for any treats. Red wasn't mine but he was a nice horse to be around. I patted his muzzle and went to the corner where I had put extra sawdust(or shavings) for me to sit on when I came in to hang out with him. I plopped down and sawdust fluttered up around me. Red put his head head up and snorted then put his head back down to look at me. Since Red was probably one of the calmest and laziest horses on the ranch I reached over and grabbed his head so I could hug it. I let go and sighed leaning against the wall and staring into Red's big bay colored eyes. I leaned into the sawdust and lay my head on it and closed my eyes.
I woke up to the sound of the stall door opening. I opened my eyes and stretched my arms but stayed in my sawdust seat.
"R-Rebecca?" a deep voice asked in front of me.
"Yeah?" I said falling back in the sawdust and closing my eyes.
"Um, have you been here the whole time?" The voice asked
"Yup" I said back popping on the p.
"Geez, I've been looking all over for you!" The voice replied kinda stressed.
"What time is it?" I asked not opening my eyes.
"It's 6:45! You've been in here for like 4 hours!"
Crud. I sat up and opened my eyes to see who it was, Drake. His hair was messy and it looked like he had been working hard or something. What was he doing looking for me? I blushed as he put his hand out to me and I grabbed it. He pulled me up and blushed and let go of my hand while stepping backwards and scratching his neck. We walked out of the stall and Drake made sure that Red stayed in.
When we got outside it was starting to get dark, or should I say it was already pretty dark. Basically the sun was just disappearing behind some mountains. I walked to the arena where the wild mare had been put, she was still there. That bugged me. I scrunched my nose as I watch her trot around the arena, Drake must have seen this and looked at me.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"I just.. It's Just... Um.." He kept staring. "I just don't like that she is still out here. Drake sighed and looked down.
"We tried."
"What?" I asked
"I said we tried, to get her in a stall I mean. But she was persistent. She wanted to stay out here, don't know why though." He sighed I looked away, embarrassed.
"REBECCA!!!!!!!" Dad called from the house.
"Uh, I gotta go, BYE!" I mumbled a little to fast as I ran to the house. Drake nodded and walked, well I don't really know.
"Hi Dad." I breathed as I bent over to catch my breath.
"Get inside." Dad muttered as he opened the door. Geez, what got him in a bad mood? I walked inside and went into the kitchen. "Where have you been?" He asked me looking me in the eye.
I squirmed under his death stare. "Erm, I mean, Er, Well.." I stammered looking everywhere but my dad's eyes.
"WELL, What?" He cut me off.
I sighed and said "I-I wen't into Red's stall and kinda, maybe, sorta fell asleep."
"Rebecca! Ugh you know what, its ok." He mumbled pinching his nose "I-I-I'm just so stressed about this new mare they brought in today, she's crazy. But I can't let her go, because then what if the herd rejects her or the herd moves." His voice softened, but then it grew stern and demanding "Don't you DARE go near her. She is to unpredictable. I-I don't want you to get hurt." I nodded, then hugged dad and said I was going to bed. I yawned and checked the time 8:34, that was early for me. I sat on my bed and read something about horses.
After reading for like 4 hours I checked the clock, 12:20. Hmm now that's late. I checked to make sure dad was asleep then snuck outside. I ran towards the arena and looked in. The mare was still walking around.I sat down and watched her as she sleepily walked around the arena.
After 15 minutes of watching her I yawned and went inside and up to my room. I flopped on my bed and like passed out.
