"Rebecca! Time to get up!!" Yelled dad from the bottem of the stairs. I groaned and rolled out of bed onto the floor. I checked the time 7:34 A.M. ugh early. "Rebecca! C'mon you gotta help with the chores!" Dad yelled again. I stood up and got changed.
Downstairs a piece of toast, eggs, bacon, and a glass of orange juice was waiting for me. "Eat Up!" Dad said grabbing his jacket. "Here are your first chores for today, when those are done I'll be in either one of the barns or in an arena." He called as he tossed a list at me and walked out the door. I looked at the list it had 7 chores for me to do.
1. get the eggs
2. feed the dogs
3. help with the horse grain
4. check waterbuckets
5. clean barn A's stalls
6. groom Pistol, Banjo, and Ginger
7. lunge Cocoa
I finish my breakfast and go outside to the chicken coop. A basket waits outside the door for me. I unlatch the door and walk inside. I grab all the eggs, 12 in all, and walk back outside. I put the basket next to the door again so I can get it later and lock the door. Then I walk to where the dog food is.
I grab 4 bowls and start pouring the food. I set each bowl down and the dogs came running. Pico, the smallest. reached the bowls first, then Martha, Bruno, and Digit came together. Pico was some terrier mix that we found and adopted off of the streets. Bruno was our Doberman Pit Bull cross that we got from a shelter when he nearly ran out of time. Martha was the Mastiff that someone gave us when she was a puppy. And finally Digit, she is my Greyhound who we resccued from a racetrack.
When I was done with the dogs I went to the feed room to help John with the horse grains. Nine buckets were already set out and filled, John was working on the others.
"I'll just go dow the line for ya, Bon Bon, Sadie, Pistol, Bean, Lola, Bandit, Beauty, Jimmy, and the last one's for Cocoa. Got that?" John asked as he kept filling buckets. " I got the rest of them, Max is gonna come and help too." He told me as he placed another bucket down.
"Gott it, Thanks John!" I replied grabbing the first three buckets. Bon Bon, Sadie, and Pistol were all next to each other so it was easy. I patted Pistol as I put his bucket in his stall. I walked back and gave the rest of the horses their buckets. I double tasked as I gave the buckets to the horses, because when I went in I checked the water too! I checked the rest of the waters and headed out of the barn.
Outside, some workers were unloading a new horse into an arena. "What's its name?" I called out.
"Raja!" Someone yelled, but I couldn't tell who. I watched Raja gallop around the arena and buck, he looked like he was having fun. Raja stopped right in front of me and nickered as he hung his chestnut head over the fence. I reached up and patted his muzzle and smiled, then continued on to barn A. We had 4 barns Barn A, B, C, and D. I grabbed a pitchfork and a wheelbarrow and walked inside. All the horses in barn A were out in arenas, being ridden, or were somewhere else. I opened the first stall and started shoveling old straw into the wheelbarrow.
On the last stall I opened the door to a surprise, little Hotshot was inside. Hotshot was a miniature horse who someone boarded here. He looked up from drinking and bobbed his head. I laughed and grabbed his halter. "Oh, someone forgot you did they?" I giggled then made a side note to take him out and groom him. I tied him up to the door and started to shovel straw.
"What you doing shoveling straw on such a beautiful day?" I jumped as someone spoke from behind me. I turned to see a tall shaggy blonde leaning against the door patting Hotshot.
