I don’t know how long I was trapped inside the locker before I heard footsteps running down the hallway. I had long since stopped crying to say the least. I was starting to feel the pain of being trapped in such an awkward position, my height making it difficult- but even someone shorter and skinnier than me would have had trouble being comfortable with this. It was cramped and the metal made it cold.

“James? JAMES!” George and Jake sounded almost panicked as their feet pounded against the hallway floor.

I let out a low whimper of distress, my face too busy being pressed against the locker wall to allow me to talk properly.

“Hold on James, we’ll get you out!” Rich was saying. I guessed from his tone of voice that he was claustrophobic.

There was the sound of metal on metal and a loud noise and then I fell backwards, out of the locker and onto the floor. Jake had used a crow bar to wrench the door open, and it was now off its hinges and on the ground.

“Are you okay, James?” George asked, crouching down beside me. I was coughing from the impact of landing on the floor and he patted my back lightly. I nodded between coughs.

“I told you, word spreads like wildfire here. People were whispering about it during fifth, and we all left class as soon as we heard.” Jake told me. “Seeing as Matt’s in the year below, the story will take a while to get to him.”

 I slowly sat up.

“I’ll get a caretaker to fix your door…” Rich said, and he jogged away.

George and Jake helped me to my feet, telling me about similar things that had happened to them. George had once been locked in a caretaker’s closet for three hours…

“…it was supposedly metaphorical for me being gay, even though I’m straight and had a girlfriend at the time.” George told me, shaking his head.

“Why doesn’t anyone do anything about it?” I asked, spitting on the floor.

“We’ve talked about it many times. Hey, maybe with you around we’ll have enough in numbers to take on Liam and his gang?” Jake suggested. George raised his eyebrows and shook his head but said nothing.

Once the caretaker had fixed my locker door we all decided that we couldn’t be bothered to go back to class. I grabbed my Misfits backpack and we mooched around in the men’s changing rooms for a while, waiting for the bell to ring so Matt could join us. I got a text from my mum saying she was sorry that she would be late home from work.

“D’you want to hang out with us, James? We’re only gonna be at mine and Matt’s, nothing special.” George asked me.

“Um…” My instinct was telling me that I should go home and be by myself… but I didn’t want to listen to it anymore. I had finally found people the same as me. I wasn’t going to let them slip through my fingertips. “…sure.”

We walked to the High Street which was roughly five minutes away from school and caught a bus to George and Matt’s house. The bus journey took another five minutes and the bus stop we got off at was literally a few metres down from their home.

When we got in the front door I learned that their mother was a clean-freak and so we all had to take our shoes off on the mat. We shuffled forward as one body, George leading us to the kitchen so we could grab drinks and snacks before he took us into the living room. We sat down on the sofa and waited for him to choose a film.

“Anyone seen… The Godfather?” he asked, and Matt, Jake and Rich simultaneously groaned.

“What’s wrong with The Godfather?” I asked them. “It’s a great film!”
