Finally it was time to have my first music lesson at my new school. Not only was it a music lesson, but it was a double period. Result.

I suppose it was my fault I hadn’t had one yet. If I had joined my new school at the beginning of the school year like a normal person would have, I would have had my first music lesson ages ago. Instead, I joined two weeks into term- that’s procrastination for you.

When I arrived at my music class third period, I was the only one there. I slowly entered the room and pulled a chair out into the middle of the space. I sat down awkwardly and looked around at nothing, waiting for someone to join me. Eventually Matt entered the room, looking at me with an odd smile on his face. I cocked my head to one side.

“Matt, what’re you doing here?” I asked him.

When I arrived at my music class third period, I was the only one there. I slowly entered the room and pulled a chair out into the middle of the room. I sat down awkwardly and looked around at nothing, waiting for someone to join me. Eventually Matt entered the room, looking at me with an odd smile on his face. I cocked my head to one side.

“Matt, what’re you doing here?” I asked him.

I took in his usual shy posture; his head partially bowed, rounded shoulders, knees turned inward slightly. He stuck his hands in his pockets and looked down at the ground, shuffling his feet.

“I do A-Level music.” he told me quietly. I smiled, impressed. He pulled up a chair and sat beside me.

Next to enter the room was Jake and Bryan, who were bickering about something, followed by Rich. Then entered a group of about seven people, all of whom eyed us with disgust before sitting on the opposite side of the room. Then George came in and sat with us.

The teacher, Ms Brisley, entered the room and silence fell on us all- apart from Jake and Bryan who continued to argue over which was better; thick or thin crust pizza…

“Today you’re going to be starting work on your first ensemble piece.” she told us. “Basically, you get yourself into a group, choose a piece of music, and work it out amongst yourselves as to who plays what. I’ll come around during the lesson and give you sheets with the criteria on them. You will have until November to have the pieces ready for recording. Off you go!”

The group of ‘normal’ people split into two smaller groups; one with four people, the other with three.

“Okay, so, let’s sort this out. Who plays what?” Rich said, dragging his chair round to face us. There was a moment of manoeuvring chairs so we were in a circle. The other two groups left the room.

“Well, as you all know, I play bass.” Matt said simply.

 “I drum.” Bryan said.

“I play guitar.” Rich, Jake and I said simultaneously. We all looked at each other shiftily- could three guitarists be too many? We all turned our attention to George.

“Well, I suppose… I could sing…” he sighed like he was unhappy being laboured with this.

“Well, I suggest that we all write down three bands we would like to cover and put them all together. Whichever band has the most votes, we’ll choose one of their songs to cover. Agreed?” Rich asked. We all nodded.

I had a feeling that working with Rich would mean many hours of practicing. He seemed to be quite the perfectionist when it came to music. Jake carelessly ripped some pages out of his exercise book and handed them around. I looked at all of them scribbling down the names of their favourite bands on their pieces of paper. I looked down at my blank piece. By the time they were all done I still hadn’t written anything. I kept trying to glance at their papers but they all shielded their writing with their hands. Jeez, this isn’t a test
