Chapter XXXI: Lost, But Now Found

This was it. This what the young reaper had been waiting for. Finally the unceasing confusion could come to an end.

Ruvel felt nervous as he walked up to Reiner’s bedroom door. He thought about the many things Reiner could tell him. Memories that remain forgot. The one concern is that Reiner is not always honest. He’ll have to keep his guard up when his supervisor tells him everything.

Then again, why would Reiner lie? Better yet, why would he ever lie to Ruvel? He never has and he had once promised that he never will. So there should be nothing to worry about right?

Ruvel heaved a sigh and took a deep breath. ‘okay.. I’m ready’ he thought as his hand made contact with the door.

It took a while but Reiner soon opened the door. He gave a little smile. “Good evening Ruve.” he said.

The nickname surprisingly didn’t bother the young reaper. He spoke. “Good evening.”

“You ready?” Reiner asked. “I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable.” he sounded a bit concern.

Ruvel gave a nod. “Yeah. I’m ready.” he said.

“You sure?” Reiner sounded even more confused and not only that, he was nervous. “What I’m about to tell you is going to sound very bizarre.” he said.

Ruvel nodded once again. “yes. I’m sure. You can tell me anything as long as you don’t lie to me.” he said.

“I promised you that I would never lie to you” Reiner said confidently. “And I’m planning to break that promise.”

Ruvel gave a small but genuine smile. The two reapers flew into the human world.

It seemed to be the same at first, Ruvel felt more comfortable since he and Reiner were alone for the first time. He watched Reiner reap the souls he needed to collect every time he finds them. Ruvel had to admit, the way Reiner would collect his souls were interesting.

Reiner turned into his human form as he found the last soul. He turned to Ruvel. “Stay here.” he said. Ruvel nodded and he jumped off the roof and landed onto the ground.

Ruvel followed Reiner as Reiner followed his soul. The young reaper watched as Reiner striked a conversation with the man. They had a nice time before Reiner made it seem like he was leaving. Finally, Reiner made his move.

Reiner walked up to a crosswalk and began to cross the road. A car was barreling towards him but the reaper pretended not to notice. Ruvel, however, could not tell that Reiner was pretending and almost freaked out. The older reaper turned to the car and seemed to be surprised. The man from before quickly ran up to Reiner and pushed him away, allowing the car to hit him instead of Reiner.

The humans near by freaked out and some called the hospital. Reiner had no reaction unlike them. His expression was blank and he approached the man before turning into his reaper form. He then gathered the man’s soul without giving the man too much pain and placed the new soul in the soul cage.

“There..” Reiner said to himself and returned to Ruvel. He smiled. “All done!”

“Cool” Ruvel said softly. “Um Reiner..?”

“Yeah?”

“What was so different about this man?” Ruvel asked. “The others you killed like you always do. So why is this one so different? Why didn't you kill him?”

Reiner heaved a sigh. “I was taught to know which souls will be sent to heaven and which souls will be sent to hell just by looking at that person in the eye. That person was going to be sent to Heaven.. so I didn't want his death to be too painful. But peaceful in a way.” he smiled said as he gave his answer. “Oh speaking of heaven, I should probably do what i promised you should i?”
