By the afternoon, Newt had sobered up again and was thrilled to finally see his friends again. The ptsd breakdown put him in whack, so everything got exaggerated, and that included excitement. He got to travel with Charlotte and Alfie too, so that was a bonus.
As they were beginning to pull up to the school, Charlotte told him to wait. "Newt, do you remember everything before you went into that ICU?" She asked, leaning forward since she had been banished to the backseat after Newt called shotgun.
"Yeah, why? It's only when they fill me up with drugs that I tend to forget a few things, but not a lot." He answered, eagerly looking at everyone running around outside, desperate to go to them.
"When that nurse was dragging you away, you called out for your mum and dad." Newt tensed up, having actually slightly forgotten that, or tried to anyway. "Who did you mean?"
"Uhm.." Newt started fidgeting, a new habit he'd picked up when he didn't want to talk about something. "You two.."
Charlotte and Alfie both breathed a sigh of relief, making Newt rather confused. "Newt, since you left a few days ago we've done nothing but miss you and want to come and visit, but we stopped ourselves so you could settle. We want you back with us. You're.. You're like a son to us, and we'd want nothing more than to have that."
"I.. For a couple weeks before Charlie called, I really felt like I was home and I could live with you, happily, forever. If I ever left school earlier than my friends thought, I would say I was going home.."
"Newt, I know you're in hospital, and you're going to be for a little while now, but.. When you get out, we know you will, do you.. Want to come back? We can go to the foster home and get the papers. We can adopt you. That's what we wanted to tell you at the dinner table."
"I.. I'd really like that." Newt caught eyes with a friend who waved at him. "I'd really, really like that. Can you make Adam stop moving me around? New places make me... Anxious."
"We can try. We'll visit as soon as we can, okay? Promise." Charlotte rubbed his arm, unable to hug him, and kissed his cheek. "Now go ahead, we love you."
Newt blushed and hugged Alfie. "I love you too.." Newt grabbed his bag and practically leapt out the door. "Bye!!"
They watched him run off, find Alby, leap at him, and then fall over onto the ground. That was the Newt they knew, the one without worries who could smile and laugh at just about anything. The hospital only depressed him, and the sooner he got out, the sooner he'd be happy again.
Newt made quick work of telling Alby and Thomas where he'd been and what happened over the weekend, both agreeing the doctors sounded horrible there. He knew he'd only be moving again to somewhere completely different soon, so he probably wouldn't be in school around that time.
Someone tall approached them, rather threatening looking at first glance, and told Newt to take the tablets. Newt simply groaned in response and tried to go back to his conversation, but he said it again which made Newt a little miffed. "Can't you see I'm talking?" He hissed.
"You can talk after you've taken them."
"Dude, it's fine." Alby reassured but Newt just turned and started walking away.
The carer tried to grab him but Newt managed to dodge his arms. "Don't touch me." He warned, taking another step back but he got grabbed by Alby instead. "What are you doing!? Let go of me!"
"I'm helping!"
Newt kicked out, but Alby had legs of steel. "Newt, if you keep doing this you won't be able to come to school anymore." The carer warned and Newt stopped. "Your tablets will stop you doing this without putting you in a daze at the same time. You'll be normal. This is the second time today, and you're not even provoked."
