(Well, hello, you're probably all wondering why I'm updating almost two days in a row; actually you're probably not wondering that you're probably just happy I'm updating, but anyway, I am updating because I was talking to my BFFITWWW, ResaReza , whom of which this book is dedicated to, and I got kinda upset. She did the math and apparently Laurence hasn't been in an episode for, like, five months. He was one of my favorite characters, so it's a little disarming. I do love Aph and her content, don't worry I'm not hating on her at all, but I'm just saying that you Laurence fangirls/fanboys are literally the best for still liking him even though he hasn't been in an episode for a while; I love you all, you are amazing. ANYWAY, here's a treat for y'all, I'm updating early~ I hope you've been enjoying this book so far, it's probably one of the best things I've ever written)
Y/N's POV
I watched him leave until his silhouette disappeared among the forest and the trees. His jacket is warm and I spend some time pulling at the seams and collecting the little pieces of yarn that come off of it. A groaning sound causes me to whip my head around quickly, shaking from fear and the cold. Dmitri lifts his head slowly and stares at me for a moment before he writhes in agony, rolling and squirming on the ground, his eyes limpid and clouded. He's screeching heart-wrenching cries, trying to reach his hand to feel his leg, but it's not there, which the absence of it just makes him start to sob.
"Y/N!!" he shouts, rubbing the blood on his hands on his face as he tries to hold his ears as if trying to block out the sounds of his own crying. I quickly manage to get up and sit myself next to him, moving his body so his head is laying just as Laurence's head was before in my lap, but he doesn't calm down. He yells my name again, "Y/N!!"
"Shhh, Dmitri, I'm right here," I rub behind his ear, trying to stay calm but I feel like my heart is being torn in two by hearing him in this much distress. "It's gone, Dmitri, it's gone, I cut it off."
"I know..." he's breathing heavily, his voice cracking and breaking as he coughs. "Thank you..."
"I shouldn't have."
"No, thank you."
"Dmitri---"
"I SAID THANK YOU," he groans loudly from pain as he moves his body away from me so he can vomit and cough just as Laurence and I had done before. I'm utterly shocked at his tone, but I say nothing as I look away from him, not wishing to see him as he continues without stopping for an awfully long time. I look back out of worry awhile later, but he's finished, wiping his lips with his sleeve. "I feel bad for the person that's going to clean that up." His comment almost makes me smile, but I don't dare.
"Nature will."
"Why are you talking like that?" he looks over at me and asks. I blink a few times in confusion,
"Like... what...?"
"Just really softly, cautiously, and slowly. That's not like you, you're normally a lot livelier."
"I just vomited and I'm staring at someone who's leg I cut off," I reply blatantly. Dmitri smirks,
"No need to be so pessimistic." This time, I smile, seeing Dmitri really doesn't like this side of me.
"I'm sorry, I should lighten up, you're right," I adjust myself so I'm sitting with my legs outstretched. Something about Dmitri's presence improves my mood even as he sits in front of our wrecked boat. Yet, he still doesn't look satisfied at my effort to be more optimistic.
"You're still talking so softly," he adjusts himself so he's laying on his back and he crosses his arms. "What, are you afraid that someone's spying on us?"
"We don't know who or what lives here," I respond, not making my voice any louder. He purses his lips and looks away from me for a moment, leaving us us in plain silence. The sounds of crickets chirping and the crash of the ocean waves fills my ears, and it's comforting. I even close my eyes to take in the smell of clear air and the scent of rain as it still sprinkles onto me from the sky. The sun is just beginning to peak out from the clouds and it looks absolutely astounding as it shines through all of the darkness. I find it kind of inspiring.
"I don't hear anyone," Dmitri finally replies, and I open my eyes to roll them.
"That doesn't give us a right to be obnoxious."
"They didn't hear me screaming earlier, apparently," he rebukes. "RIGHT?! YOU DIDN'T HEAR ME, DID YOU?!" Dmitri suddenly yells, cupping his mouth so his voice travels and echoes through the air. I shush him,
"Dmitri, what the Nether are you doing?!"
"TRYING TO PROVE THAT NO ONE IS ON THIS STUPID ABANDONED ISLAND WE WASHED UP ONTO!!" he begins to laugh, which makes me want to tell him to shut up, but I refrain. There's a change in the wind and I hold my hand up to tell Dmitri to stop as I listen, detecting the sound of rushing steps in my ear. Next thing I know, I fall backward and there's a sword to my throat, Dmitri's screams filling the air.Laurence's POV
I'd left a while ago to find Nekoette and no luck at all finding a village. I lean my arm on a tree to catch my breath and hold my aching side. I'm glad I'd given Y/N my jacket, but I wish my shirt was a bit thicker and warmer. Eventually, I find myself listening to the sounds around me, hearing gruff voices not sounding not too far away. As I suspected, just beyond a few trees is a group of young men with masks on, holding swords that couldn't be any sharper than my pinky toenail. Yet, a familiar distressed little cry tells me to get involved and I feel myself filling myself with dark magic. This has gotten easier the more I do it, but it still consumes me and causes me to gag a little as it feels like magic runs through my veins and up my throats into my mouth, making it dry. My vision fogs up a tad, but I am still aware of the surroundings around me. Once the red flecks steam up from my flesh, I know that I'm in my full form and I jump out at the men, punching one in the skull with my fist. He quickly falls to the snowy ground, not even screaming. I pick up his useless sword and stab it into the next guy's arm, causing him to cry out, which is like music to my Shadow Knight ears. The next guy gets a quick kick in the gut before I grab his sword and jab it into his own leg. The attacks I perform aren't fatal, due to the fact that Nekoette's eyes are watching as she's tied to a tree. These men must be bandits; like the ones that kidnapped Y/N all of that while ago. I have no sympathy for them. The final man tries to stab me in the stomach, but I put my arm in front of him and he only tears my skin a little as I hear his jaw crack when my fist impacts it. He falls to the ground and I quickly run over to Nekoette, who looks traumatized beyond belief.
"Are you okay?" I ask as calm as possible, but it sounds panicky. She merely nods her head as I get the ropes around her untied. It pains me to see that they'd tried to rip her clothes open; they'd wanted to take advantage of such a small, innocent girl. She probably didn't even know. I pick her up and hold her in my arms tightly as I run, trying to get back to Y/N as fast as my legs can run. They go even faster when Dmitri's scream cracks in the air.
"That's Dmitri..." Nekoette murmurs, clearly looking out of it and spacey. I know, I know it's Dmitri. Lets just hope it's only him in pain and not him and Y/N in danger. If it's bandits, I'm not going to restrain myself from ripping out their throats. I try to clear my mind of my brutal thoughts, but they keep coming back. It takes me a while to notice I'm still in my Shadow Knight form, which explains while it's difficult for me to think sincerely. When I reach the clearing that Y/N and Dmitri are in, I see her on the ground, a man with white hair holding a large ruby sword to her neck, talking to her softly, but visibly harsh. Dmitri is one the ground, crying and trying to scoot forward and grab the sword in front of him that Y/N had used to cut off his leg. I don't hesitate as I swiftly run over to grab the sword, taking it from Dmitri right before he could grab it and aim to hit the man in the head. He unfortunately acts fast and deflects it, holding his sword sideways. The smirk on his face concerns me.
"So you're her significant other, I suppose?" he purrs, which makes me apply more pressure so he'll hopefully take my blow.
"I'm significant in whether you're dead or not," is my answer and it makes him laugh a little, releasing the tension between our two swords when he jumps back a few paces.
"I like you already."Thank you guys for reading this chapter! I really enjoyed writing it and a new one will be out very soon!
