Eventful Times

Above the ice-bound streamlet bends

Adam had been staying at the Beast's castle for nearly a week now, and he's been fed, cared for, and sheltered. He didn't know what made her change her mind so quickly – he was on his way to go back and talk to her, but he got a message asking him to stay at her home. Maurice was enthusiastic about it, but he wasn't sure he wanted to stay there anymore.

They haven't talked since he settled in. It seemed like she was avoiding him or it might've been him avoiding her, but they never crossed paths. The house was humongous, but it wasn't that big that they didn't see each other for a week.

Adam was so surprised that she was being nice to him. He just wished she was kind enough to make the two idiots stop arguing.

"Get that fire of yours away from me! You're going to burn everything in this house and take yourself out too!" Cogsworth yelled.

"Well, that stupid ticking of yours is so annoying. I don't need to hear it every time your hand moves!" Lumiére shouted back. "And don't get me started with your obnoxious correcting!"

"What's wrong with me correcting your mistakes, huh? I'm trying to make sure everything's as perfect as it can be!" Cogsworth and Lumiére were touching faces, and Adam sighed, knowing it was never going to end.

"Now, now, boys, let's settle this like real men and leave my room," Adam interjected, but neither of them seemed to have heard him, or they were just ignoring whatever he was saying. "This is getting tiring. You two argue everyday. Don't you ever agree on anything?"

"Well, there was that time when . . ." Cogsworth began.

"And that . . . oh forget it – we've never agreed on anything in our lives," Lumiére exasperated. "Maybe this one time when the Beast," – he coughed – "actually, never mind. We've never agreed at all."

Adam stared at the candleholder. "What were you going to say?"

"N-nothing. Just got off topic, that's all."

"No, please, tell me."

He shifted uncomfortably. "Well, the Beast can be quite . . . rude at times, but she's really a good person. There was a day where she took Mrs. Potts's boy, Chip, out and he came back so exhilarated. We both agreed that the Beast was changing. Chip really has a hand over her, but it surprised everyone here. She really wants to be happy."

"That's what I'm here for. I'm trying my best to make her herself. I've never met her, but I've heard that she's nicer than this."

Lumiére smiled. "She has her moments. Now, let me get back to my earlier conversation."

Cogsworth and Lumiére went back to arguing, and Adam fell onto his bed with a sigh.

The Beast knocked on Adam's door, waiting patiently outside. Mrs. Potts was standing besides her with a smug smile. Earlier that morning, she had a serious talk with the Beast, and long story short: The Beast was going to befriend the young man whether she wanted to or not.
