“Jennie.”
The girl allowed a small smile, hearing the call of her closest classmate, Elie Stronghold. Taking a seat directly behind her friend, Jennie took out a workbook and began to complete her homework due that afternoon.
A light tug caused Jennie to look up once more, into the chocolate brown, almond shaped eyes that nearly all boys in their school fantasized of looking into, “You’re not going to talk to me?” Elie asked with a slight pout.
Jennie lent her friend a small simper, accompanied by the ever-so-slight inclination of her head towards her unfinished homework, “I have to finish this; I didn’t have time to do so last night.”
“Were you out late?” Elie wanted to know.
But Jennie said nothing, returning to her work once more, knowing fully well that in a moment’s time, Elie would forget all about her presence anyways.
Another nudge, with just a little more force than the last, withdrew Jennie’s concentration on her homework once more.
“Talk to me,” Elie demanded with a small pout, her entire body twisted around so that she could rest her head on Jennie’s desk, “I’m bored.”
Cracking a grin at her friend’s childish behavior, Jennie reluctantly pushed her book aside and reached up to readjust her ponytail, pulling back strands of hair that had fallen loose during her customary walk to school, “You win. Talk.”
At her friend’s surrender, Elie’s head shot up, her eyes dancing brightly with excitement and a surge of energy rushing through her body, “So last night I called Danny and asked him where he was. He told me he was downtown with some friends so naturally I went and usually he just pushes me away but this time he let me stay and so we spent all night…”
Elie’s words were almost immediately zoned out as Jennie’s thoughts drifted elsewhere. She’d be much better off finishing her homework that so desperately had been begging to be completed, as opposed to listening to Elie babble on about her latest experience with Danny Blake.
Their relationship had always been this way: Elie would share the juiciest and most interesting parts of her life, knowing fully well that Jennie wouldn’t tell a soul, while Jennie would sit patiently and listen, though not really taking in any word of it.
“… I don’t know why he won’t let me though,” Elie was saying, still on the subject of Danny, “It’s as though every time I take one step too close for his comfort he takes two more steps back, leaving me hanging.”
Danny Blake had been Elie’s object of obsession ever since the girl had discovered that a person was able to possess romantic feelings towards the opposite sex. She’d spent years flirting around with boys and leading them on, only to turn them down in hopes that Danny would recognize her as someone more than just a friend.
However, it seemed as though Elie was just like any of the guys who she flirted with.
“Maybe you should just give up on him,” Jennie suggested, “Give the other guys a chance.”
Elie opened her mouth to protest but was stopped by the sudden call of her name, drawing both girls’ attention towards the speaker.
“Elie Stronghold! Miss me?”
Jennie’s heart dropped as she quickly withdrew herself from the conversation and buried herself back in the previously abandoned workbook. It happened every time George Right came around to flirt with her all-too-popular friend.
As Elie began to completely forget about Jennie’s presence, just as she did whenever in any guy’s presence, Jennie tried her best to concentrate on the work in front of her rather than eavesdropping on her friend’s conversation.
But her senses won and before she knew it, Jennie had deserted her homework entirely, now listening intently to the conversation taking place just a row of desks ahead of her. Not that any one else cared or noticed.
“So when are we going out?” George was asking, taking the seat beside her while disregarding the fact that it wasn’t even his assigned seat.
Elie laughed, “That would depend on when you’re willing.”
Slinging an arm around her waist and drawing Elie close, George whispered something inaudible to even Elie in her ear, something that Jennieso desperately wanted in on as well.
At that very moment, George looked back and Jennie quickly diverted her gaze downward, back to her homework and pretending to be entirely immersed in her work once more. However, when she sneaked a peak back upwards, she noticed that George had been looking past her instead and was now starring at another boy who had just walked through the door.
She wanted to hit herself for even thinking that a guy as cute as George would bother even glancing her way.
Giving up any hope in finishing her homework with George and Elie flirting right in front of her, Jennie reluctantly put the book away and turned to see the cause of George’s sudden halt in flirtatious attitude towards her friend.
Danny Blake.
Not to anyone’s surprise, only seconds later Elie was out of her seat and clinging to his side, having forgotten entirely about George much like in the same manner that she had forgotten about Jennie.
Sighing softly as she watched George slowly rise to join them, Jennie inwardly scolded herself for having fallen for such a guy she knew would never return the gesture.
Although Jennie was technically Elie’s best friend, no one bothered to pay attention to her. Everything was about Elie Stronghold and Elie Stronghold only. There was no room for anyone else. It had always been that way.

“Are you going home now?” Elie came up to Jennie and fell in step alongside her as the two walked outside towards the main entrance of their school.
Jennie nodded, already knowing that her friend had different plans in mind.
She didn’t even need to ask to be told, for Elie was perfectly willing to provide the information, whether or not Jennie desired to know, “I’ve asked Geroge to go to the arcade with their whole group of friends. Naturally, Danny will be there as well.”
At the mention of George, Jennie frowned, “So now you’re just using him to spend more time with Danny?”
Smiling sheepishly, Elie pushed her friend lightly, “Don’t worry about it! George knows and he’s fine with it. Besides, we’re friends.”
Jennie stayed silent this time and just nodded, knowing it was hopeless to try and talk her friend out of her old habitual ways, while also knowing that what Elie had said was perfectly true. There wasn’t a single soul at their school who didn’t know of her ongoing obsession with Danny Blake.
As the two girls stepped outside, Jennie looked off at a far distance and noticed George, Danny, and a few of their other friends impatiently waiting for Elie. Upon their arrival, George’s face immediately brightened as he headed towards Elie.
Seeing the enthusiasm in the boy’s visage at the mere sight of her friend, Jennie bit her lip and looked away, instinctively taking a step away and out of the picture.
However, this time her friend noticed with a slight frown, “You can come with us, if you’d like.”
Jennie just smiled softly and declined the offer, knowing she would only pushed aside and forgotten even if she joined in, “I should get home.”
Elie nodded, not bothering to press the matter further.
With a wave of her hand, Jennie turned her back and walked away just in time to miss the bright smile and sweet words that George had offered Elie.
Exhaling slowly while blowing a few strands of hair out of her face, Jennie ran a hand through her hair and frowned, kicking at the ground below her.
Knowing that she was in no condition to return home to an empty house, Jennie quickly improvised plans contradicting to the ones she had told her friend of and altered her path, heading for an alternative destination instead.
