“Jennie!”

She was just as surprised as any other girl in classroom 3-11 when the notorious boy for his charms, Alex, sauntered into their classroom during lunchtime calling Jennie’s name in a singsong voice, as though the two had known each other for years.

The reality was that they only spoken one other time but judging by the jealous and disgusted glares sent in her direction, Jennie wasn’t too confident that anyone would believe her.

Her eyes rose, widened in surprise as she caught the genial gaze of Alex’s. Chopsticks paused just before her mouth, Jennie asked in a meek voice, “Me?”

Alex’s head bobbed eagerly up and down as he stopped just in front of her desk, ignoring the prying gazes of their peers, “Are you free after school?”

When wasn’t she?

Wordlessly, Jennie nodded her head in response.

Alex flashed a smile and instantly, Jennie understood why so many girls had fallen for him. If not Danny, then Alex. Nearly every girl who attended had once taken a liking for either them or anyone else in their group of friends. Jennie had foolishly chosen George.

“Come with us then! We’re going to Karaoke.”

“Us?” she repeated uncertainly, only a bit hesitant to instantaneously agree.

Alex shrugged but leaned in a little closer, speaking in quieter tones so those eavesdropping wouldn’t be able to hear, “Danny and I. You don’t mind, right?”

Jennie quickly hid her shock and shook her head, “No, that’s fine.”

As soon as she said it, sirens went off inside her head, all shouting, screaming, kicking violently why she had agreed. In normal circumstances she would have denied the offer, especially considering the fact that Danny would be there and Elie wouldn’t. But for some reason, she felt pushed towards agreeing. She wasn’t too sure why.

Straightening up, Alex flashed her one last smile, “Cool. I’ll meet you outside the gates then.” And he left.

Just as he was exiting the classroom, Elie and Danny walked in, Danny shooting Alex a questioning glance and Alex merely grinning from ear to ear in response.

Danny turned and followed Alex back outside while Elie frowned and paused for a moment before resuming her track inside, making her way towards Jennie with an oblivious simper on her face.

Whispers filled the classroom as meddlers began to formulate their own ideas on the matter.

“Jennie!”

After the second time of hearing her own name called in such friendly terms from a boy she barely knew, Jennie felt as though she had already grown long since used to it. There was a certain quality of Alex that made just about any person he was around feel at ease.

Elie turned curiously, a bit befuddled as to why Danny’s best friend was calling Jennie’s name, “You know Alex?”

Jennie shrugged, though not keen on discussing the matter with her friend, “I’ve got to go, Elie. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Elie nodded in agreement, turning in the opposite direction to walk away. However, as a second thought, she turned back around and asked, “Are you going home?”

Insides jerking to a halt, thoughts of how to respond began to rush throughout Jennie’s mind as she frantically wondered which response would settle best with her friend. Knowing her time to respond before provoking suspicion was limited; Jennie quickly nodded her head with a half-smile, “Don’t I always?”
