Yandere-kun was an emotionless baby. He was mainly driven by biological impulses, such as crying when hungry. Growing up, He never enjoy playing with toys. His father was worried about him but his mother insisted he was fine. This provoke a fight between them putting a strain in their relationship.
As a toddler, Yandere-kun did not enjoy the doctor visits; once he realized that "acting normal" would cause his father to stop worrying about him and stop taking him to doctors, He began acting like a normal child. He kept up the act throughout the rest of his childhood. He always found it to be beneficial to pretend to be normal, so he accepted that he would have to keep up an act for his entire life.
When he started school, Yandere-kun was bullied by other students for not being normal, however, he only saw it an inconvenience. This hardly affected him. Due to this, he chose to maintain the façade of a normal boy to fit in. However, he always had the desire to feel complete like other children his age. His mother once told that he would one day meet an individual who would complete him, he thought about it constantly, considering it the only important thing in her life, even considering it was the only one reason to continue living.
YandereDev has stated that Yandere-chan is a person who has never taken a life or harmed another person before meeting Senpai.
Ayato was the same as his female counterpart. However when he met Senpai, he was more dangerous...

Yandere-kun decided if he could experience any kind of enjoyment. He experimented by killing insects. When he discovered that killing insects brought him no joy, he decided to never experiment on animals, with similar results.
But that one day, he broke that rule... by killing a kitten...

Ayato didn't care for the cat's life...
But he didn't felt no amusement for it's death.
Yandere-kun then meets Senpai and his principles become completely guided by the goal of obtaining him for himself by any means necessary.
...Espically killing every boy in the entire school who dares to get close to Senpai.
