My Beginning

It was a cool morning in September and the breeze was blowing strong. Out of my pocket slipped out the orientation paper I was given at work this morning. I finally landed a gig as a receptionist at the hospital. It was the break I finally needed.

Two years ago I got hit by a drunk driver, it was a hit and run and we never were able to find out who did it. The driver left me there on the side of the road, stuck in a ditch. I managed to get out of the car, but I left a vertical cut on my forearm from the broken glass. I made it maybe five feet before my car burst into flames and I passed out. The next thing I remembered was staring to the eyes of a paramedic in the ambulance. I was in and out of consciousness all the way to the hospital. This was the moment I swore to myself that I would start to live my life and help others instead of being selfish. Life is short and it's time I lived it. I managed to pay off my huge medical bills by working various odd jobs. I worked at the zoo for sometime picking up trash around the park. Sometimes I worked in the Dippin' Dots booth when the workers didn't show up, those were the best days because I didn't have to stand in the heat all day. I also worked twirling signs outside of this place that sold mattresses.

The reason I worked these jobs and not a better paying one is because  I never finished high school. My mom died when I was 17. She had overdosed on drugs in our bathtub, and my father... well, he wasn't in the picture. I have never even met him. I dropped out of school because I couldn't handle the how my life was turning out. Yes, my mother was addicted to drugs, but she was still my mom and I loved her. Nothing will ever change that.

Just a few months ago I finally got my GED, this helped me get my job at the hospital. It  also helped that I stayed in touch with one of the nurses that was there for my accident, Winnie. Winnie is a 52 year old nurse and I can always go to her for anything, she has that nurturing quality that makes me feel like i'm being wrapped in a warm blanket that came straight out of the dryer. She's always trying to set me up with someone, but I keep telling her that i'm waiting to get my life together before I make the commitment of being in a relationship.
