"So Dev, got a girl yet?" My friend J asked me as we were walking by some rough-looking doughnut shops. I sighed knowing that no matter how hard I pushed myself, I just couldn't like g---- my train of thought got interrupted by a blood-curdling scream and a loud crack. The sun was setting and I could barely make out two figures standing over a lifeless body in the alley next to me. I shook off my human look so I could save my energy in case something, went down. My blue veins lit up the alley as two figures hissed.
"Little early for dinner vamps" I smirked. They looked at me with dead eyes.
"Why can't you mind your own business, Warlock." The creatures hissed back. My hand illuminated with a pale grey ball of magic.
"Now I suggest waiting to prey on innocent civilians until sundown or else I'll let this Seov fly free." (A Seov was a ball of very powerful magic) they both sighed as they slumped over and looking defeated, jumped on top of a nearby building and disappeared into the early night. I let the Seov fizzle out while J's jaw was sweeping the floor.
"They just left like that, no fight?" I shrugged it off and stayed silent all the way to the Haven, our home full of mythic creatures. J transformed into his werewolf self and bounded to the werewolf section of the Haven, whilst I made my way to the tower. It was the only place in the Haven that lodged Warlocks. However, warlocks around these parts were few in numbers and much less potent than I'm supposed to be. All the responsibility that rested on my shoulders weighed me down, I could never find the calm in order to help me rest. Sleep was like a privilege and I never earned it. I was so wrapped in thought I bumped into someone.
"Sor..." I looked into this boy's hazel eyes.
"Apologies Devin," he said in a sergeant-like tone.
"First off, I don't need that much respect and second, it's fine... How do you know my name?" I inquired.
The boy's rough tone diminished and laughter erupted."You're the most well-known warlock in the Haven and in all of Las Vegas!" The boy chuckled with what sounded like an angel song. I shook my head
"I guess I'll see you around?" I asked. He replied with a cryptic,
"Maybe"
As soon as I walked in, Chief Chamo stopped me."We have some urgent matters to discuss Devin." I put a hand up.
"Not now" I uttered determined to finally get some rest tonight. My body couldn't handle the sleep deprivation much longer. At the end of the corridor, I climbed up the ladder to the two-bedded room equipped with a contemporary kitchen and a petite round table, housing two red chairs underneath. I could not help but stare at the surrounding view that flooded in from the outside. The walls were mostly constructed of stained glass, giving me the clearest view of the wolf pack huddled together under their translucent section.
It's nice, I thought, they get to live out their lives free of (most) worries surrounded by their pack, but I'm stuck having to be the most powerful bloody warlock in America! What would I do if I turned out to be ordinarily good with magic? I would disappoint everyone.
