I opened my eyes groggily to look around my room and tiredly acknowledge that I had finally achieved my dream of sleep. My sparkly black Duvet fell over my bare chest as I sat up and did a small spell to clean my teeth. My eyes snapped to the trapdoor, as I sensed someone coming up the ladder. It opened and an unexpected head of hazelnut hair popped through. I suddenly became embarrassed as all I was wearing were pants and boxers. I knew that I was staring at him, the boy I ran into at the door yesterday, but I just couldn't help it. He was wearing a sea-blue shirt and some loose brown pants. I additionally noticed a faint smudge of glittery blue above his eyes. I ripped my gaze away to stare at his bare feet. I could feel him watching too, but as soon as the thought came into mind he cleared his throat and said
"Chief Chamo caught me in the halls and told me to tell you that you need to see her in fifteen minutes...Like I'm her messenger boy," he grumbled.
"Okay I'll go," I informed and started to walk towards the exit. He waggled his finger near my exposed chest and said,
"Hoooooold up there"
My heart was racing.
"Although not bad," he whispered, "You need to change." He began motioning to my half-naked body.
A puzzling look passed over his face as he told me he needed to go and did precisely that.
I turned away and got dressed in a formal warlock violet shirt embellished with silver whorls and a light blue cape. I topped off the look with baggy red pants.
I descended my ladder and was soon confronted by the towering Chief Chamo."There are pressing matters at hand Devin" she thundered. "A vampire has been killing humans, drinking them completely dry. We cannot risk our exposure, every single one of our lives would be in danger if the humans found out we existed. We could be experimented on, or even terminated. So you can imagine how important it will be to solve this quickly and quietly. My team has had no luck in finding the perpetrator so I need you."
"How would I help?"
She led me to a ruby-encrusted door with a small sign that read, "Supernatural Evidence". The Chief opened the door and had me feast my eyes on hundreds of wood-carved shelves. While she was reaching into one she whispered;"All the traditional methods of tracking haven't worked, so we thought magic would do the trick." Chamo presented tweezers that gripped an alarmingly sharp fingernail, like the one of a vampire.
"Our intel points that this is from the killer.""I have only studied tracking spells... but I can try," I Informed her.
I held a hovering hand over the nail and one in front of me. To my bemusement, a sign showed up reading "Las Vegas's Own Tillie's Bar And Food". Not only had my spell worked but it had pointed me right in the direction of the individual who threatened the existence of my friends and supernatural brethren.
"Will you need backup Devin?" Chamo asked. I shook my head and opened a portal outside of the evidence room to the bar. Two small cuts appeared on my arms, the unfortunate price for overusing magic.
I stepped through onto a scarcely populated street littered with empty bottles and scraps of plastic waste. After scanning the littered streets of the surrounding area, I headed to the back of the restaurant. As a precaution, I pulled my diamond-hilted dagger from an invisible pocket in my cape and slowly slinked around the corner to the back of the human restaurant. As my eyes looked at the dimly lit employees' smoke area, my dagger clattered to the ground. Instead of the criminal being some low-life vamp who couldn't keep in in their jaw, it was the boy who was recently in my room. He was menacingly looming over an innocent human woman, fangs burrowed into her neck. She had clearly stopped fighting him, the life had been oozing out of her for too long that I knew she struggled to hold on. He looked at me, a tear rushing down his face. The vampire appeared to be upset with the damage he was doing. That was something that was highly unusual in the vampire community where death was nothing but a natural part of life.
I used simple magic to gently push him off of her, wipe her memory, and help her body heal. The small cuts on my arms turned into shallow gashes reflecting the strain I forced onto my magic. I plucked my dagger from the cigarette-littered cement and walked toward him. He backed away with terror reflected in his eyes until he hit the rusty metal fence that guarded this area. I opened a portal which caused me to yell in pain as the gashes got so deep they were practically spurting blood. I hastily stepped through the portal, dragging the ashamed blood-sucker behind me. It unloaded us into my room where I furiously searched underneath my bed for bandages.
"Why aren't you healing yourself?" He asks suddenly.
I started wrapping my arms and replied;"Don't ask me why, but warlocks can't heal themselves."
"Are you not going to turn me in?" The boy uttered. I arose from the ground after efficiently wrapping my arms. I had worked up such an appetite that I couldn't get to the pantry fast enough.
"No" I choked out with a mouth full of marshmallows. I interjected into my own grub-fest to close the velvety curtains as the sun started to crest and blast through the windows. It was quite difficult to eat as the horrendous aroma of burning vampire flesh wafted through the minuscule room.
"You know what I did! I'm a killer! A murderer, so just turn me in! Something is wrong with me. I never get full no matter how much I eat. I fear that I will do so much damage to innocent people if you don't tell Chamo."
"I am not going to turn you in. You and I both know that killing is in your nature. Even though you do have basic rules of consumption that you need to adhere to, everyone deserves a second chance especially when it comes to something that is your inherent nature. You also are clearly distressed with your actions, and good on you for being a killer with a conscience," I teased.
"What are you doing?" He said quietly and unconcerned as I approached him and initiated a spell, determined to figure out the root of his erratic behavior. I pointed to a bump on his visibly strong neck and inquired how long it had been there.
"Few weeks and I thought my super-fast-vampy-healing-powers thing would kick in by now but NOPE THEY DIDNT!" He yelled. Before he could realize what I was doing, I plunged my dagger into the bump. The slim vampire growled as his fangs came out to defend himself.
"What are you doing?!"
I grabbed something from the cut that appeared to be a silver beetle. His fangs instantly retracted and he made a gross retching noise. I squished the thing between my fingers. Thick silver ooze drained from the vermin.
"What is that?" he inquired with a wide-eyed look adorned on his features."I don't know but it must've been causing your symptoms. Anyways, I need to go somewhere to avoid the inquiring mind of Chamo. Take a rest and a breather here. Compose yourself, and then go back to whatever it is you do."
"I was thinking of running for president. Sound good?" He laughed.
"Perfect." I smiled at his remark, one that brought about an embarrassing shade of pink to my cheeks.
