Kelli and Krum were the first surprises in the entire third challenge, but they seemed to trigger a chain reaction. Monsters popped up every few minutes, and not always greek monsters either. At one point, Percy came across a massive blast-ended skrewt. It was like the primodoral of blast-ended skrewts, twenty feet across and ten feet tall. The good thing was, Percy could outrun it.
Percy seemed to be walking for ages when all of a sudden, his gut screamed run at him. He didn't hesitate, and sprinted forward as fast as he could. He didn't know if there was a monster behind him, or if someone was in trouble ahead. Turns out, it was the latter.
Fleur had her wand out, advancing on Harry who was entangled in the hedges (stupid magical hedges and their stupid entwining branches). Harry was furiously trying to wrestle his wand arm out of the hedge's grasp.
"Petrificus totalus!" Percy yelled, and the blast knocked Fleur to the side. She fell on the grass, limbs completely snapped together. Percy ran over and bent down next to Fleur, turning her on her back. Like Krum, her eyes were milky white. A strangled yell drew Percy away from Fleur and to Harry, who was slowly being eaten by the magic hedge. "Releashio!" Percy pointed his wand at Harry, who fell to his knees and scrambled away quickly.
Percy approached Harry like how someone would approach a rabid dog. "Are you okay?"
Harry nodded. "Yeah." He glanced over to Fleur's still form. "I thought she was alright."
"She is," Percy corrected him. "But she's not right, right now. Her eyes are all weird."
Harry inhaled deeply. "Right. Let's hope whatever got her won't get us."
Percy nodded, and Harry stood up. They began on in silence, until they came on a fork.
"Well, see you then," Harry said weakly as they parted.
Percy nodded back and went on.
He had barely been walking three feet when his senses began tingling again. Instantly, Riptide was in one hand and his wand in the other. All of a sudden, he could hear a distant roaring sound. But it wasn't like a monster roar. This was more... natural.
Then he saw the massive wall of water descending down on him.
Instantly, Percy sighed in relief. Water. What an obstacle. Note the sarcasm.
"Hello, old friend." Percy tucked his wand back into his pocket and raised his hand. The mini tsunami parted down the middle and crashed on either side of Percy, but not a splash landed on him. Or maybe it did, and he just instantly dried. As he walked through the river of water that was soaking into the ground, Percy felt ridiculously like that old guy in the stories he had heard before. What was that guy's name? Noah? No, Moses. And the red sea. Except this was blue. Well, wasn't the red sea blue too? Because it was a sea? But then why was it called the red sea? Or maybe some guy named Red discovered it, so it's Red's sea--
Suddenly, Percy almost walked into a figure. Someone with a wand held very menacingly out in front of them. Someone with a very ugly haircut, a very ugly wooden leg, and a very very creepy electric blue eye.
"What are you?" Mad-Eye Moody hissed, his eye wide in surprise. "Wandless magic?"
Percy took a step back, his hand going back to Riptide in his pocket. "What're you doing here?"
Moody bared his teeth. Maybe he was smiling. Who knows. "I'm patrolling the perimeters, aren't I?" he hissed. "Making sure none of you die?" He gave a harsh laugh.
Percy put his hands casually in his pockets. His fingers curled around his wand and Riptide.
"You've not made my job easy, you know." He took a step closer, his wand trembling in his hand. "Getting both Krum and Fleur, although maybe it's best you got Fleur. She fought me, you know. The curse went horribly wrong. Tried to get Harry instead of you."
Percy's blood chilled. "What do you mean, instead of me?" Then he blinked. "Wait. You mean instead of me. Geez, you'd think after so many people trying to kill me, I'd catch on after a while," He said, shaking his head.
Moody's magical eye whizzed around in his head. It was very disorienting. "Wonderful story," he said, stepping closer. "But I'm afraid you can't go blabbing everything if you come out of here alive. Although it won't be a problem by the end of the night, it'll certainly complicate things." He raised his wand. "Imperio!"
"Stupefy!" Percy yelled in response. There was an explosion of sparks as the two spells hit each other.
"Stupefy!" Moody shouted back.
"Protego!"
Percy held the shield up as his right hand fumbled in his pocket, uncapping Riptide with one hand. The blade narrowly missed his thumb.
"Bombarda Maxima!" Moody roared, and the spell shattered. "Expelliarmus!"
The wand and Riptide flew out of Percy's hands, sailing over the hedge. Before he could do anything, Moody thrust his wand forward.
"Imperius!"
