Being a oldest child comes with great responsibility. I mean you have to help more around the house. That is also including taking care of your younger siblings.
Which is what I'm doing with my brother Andrew. I had picked him up from school and decided to take him out for some yogurt. Once we get to the Oliver's Yogurt Shop first he chose the yogurt flavor and then choose whatever topping he wanted.
One we had finished ordering his yogurt I paid for it. Well, technically I didn't pay for it. My mom transferred money to my card so I can buy us some yogurt. But still in a way I'm keeping my brother the company. We sit at a table that's right next to a window. I didn't want any yogurt because I know I had to do my feeds once I got home.
He sits right across from me. "So how was school." I ask Andrew. He takes a scoop of his yogurt and he eats it. I wait for him to answer the question.
Andrew covers his mouth and swallows. "It was good." He answers. Really that's all? It was just good.
"Anything interesting happened at school?" I had asked him. My brother isn't really the type to open up, well at least open up to his family. I feel that he just likes to keep it in, which is unhealthy. Well he's a boy all boy's don't like to be emotional.
Mainly because they are raised to be the rock. That emotions are to be shown as a weakness. Which is stupid because it's better to release emotion rather than bundling it all up. And once that bundle gets full, well that's when hell breaks loose. And boy I know what that looks like,to just hold everything in before hell breaks loose.
"No same old routine." He takes a little scoop of his yogurt and swallows it. "The teachers are still teaching. The nerds are still being nerds. The popular girls are trying to be hoes and act like a "bad bitch' and I'm" he sighs "still single."
"Hey it's okay you'll find someone." I comfort him with that thought because it's true. After all I found my one.
"Yeah whatever." Is all he can say. "No one wants to date a closet case."
"Andrew." I say almost yelling at him and almost making a scene. My brother was bullied in sixth grade because people at his school thought he was gay and now that he is in eighth grade things have been getting better.
"What it's true."
I ask him "Really there's not one person who would want to date you."
"Well there are."
"See. like who?"
"The guys who are gay." He says and laughs. I smack my tongue. "But I don't want to do that."
"I'm sorry Andrew that you have to go through this."
He has a questioning look on his face. "Why are you sorry? I mean you have it worse. I mean you have a disease that's incurable yet there you go being strong and still living your life. I don't have it worse because there's someone who has it worse than me." He takes another scoop of yogurt and eats it. And then another and another as if he were to be eating his emotions.
I don't know whether I should be proud or hurt by what he just said. Well I'll just go with proud since he did look at it from all angles in a way. I decide to change the topic. 'So we haven't really talked about Ciro."
"What's there to talk about?" he asks me. He looks down and stares off ,to what I can assume, space.
"What do you think of him?"
"Well I don't know. It's like he's trying too hard at times. Like when you guys were making out" i chuckle and he continues "on the couch and try inviting me to sit down I wanted to roll my eyes because it's like really." He squints his eyes. "You really trying to invite me to sit down on that musty couch and try to third wheel while watching Grey's Anatomy. Yeah no thanks."
He then puts a smile on his face. Which makes me smile because I know he's happy. "You saw us making out?" I just had to ask him.
'I didn't see you making out, but you can tell." What the heck?
"What do you mean? How can you tell?"
"I'm not giving away the hints after someone makes out with another." He takes another scoop of his yogurt, but he doesn't put it inside it in his mouth. "But I will tell you next time you should have a brush with you." He then puts the yogurt in his mouth and swallows it. I laugh, but take note of what he said.
My brother is smart. Smart for his own good. He's doing way better than i was doing when I was in school. He always did good in school, but not so good in being a social butterfly. I mean he can talk to anyone it's just he chooses not too.
"Random chick blonde with curls at the end of her hair coming up towards you. Six o'clock." Andrew tells me.
"Shit" was all I could say.
"Hi." The random chick says with a smile. She had a nice figure and wore I nice red shirt with some black jeans. I smile back at her. "You must be Luna, Ciro has told me so much about you."
She knows Ciro so maybe she could be his cousin or his ex or maybe a friend. So i ask her "How do you know Ciro?"
"Oh" She puts her hand on her chest "I'm sorry I forgot to mention that I was his cousin."
"Oh okay it's nice to meet you. What was your name?"
"Veronica. Well I have to run, hopefully I can talk to you soon."
"Yeah for sure."
"Ok bye." she says waving at me.
'Bye." I wave back. I see her exiting the yogurt shop.
"What the hell was I chopped liver?" Andrew says giving off a little bit of attitude.
"That was weird." Is all I can say to describe the interaction.
"Yeah no kidding after all she was staring at you for the past ten minutes."
"Wait what?" I'm shocked that she was literally staring at me for the past ten minutes and my brother didn't bother to say anything.
"Yeah she was. Well she wasn't literally staring at you for the whole ten minutes, but there were glances toward you. Geez do you pay attention to your surroundings" I shake my head that I hadn't notice her. "Besides don't like her."
"Why? She seemed nice." I mean other than the fact that she stared at me.
Andrew explains "She seemed fake. The whole acting innocent thing was just an act."
I tilt my head and look at him. "How do you know it was an act?"
"Because I do the same thing when I meet knew people. The whole" he mocks her voice and her hand gestures "'Oh I'm sorry I forgot to mention'." He sighs and rolls his eyes "Please, that's what I do whenever mom and dad have friends over. You'd be surprise how many other people pull that stunt."
He does have a point the little shit always acts fake whenever we have company over.
"Yeah well-"My phone rings before I can finish. A number, but I don't know who it belongs to. I answer it.
"Hello?"
"Hey it's Justine can I stop to tell you something about Ciro? It's important."
I'm shocked that she got my number. "You can't say it over text?"
"I rather not say it over the phone."
"Ok I'll send you the address."
"Ok." I hang up the phone.
"Who was that?" Andrew asks.
"A new friend, well sorta."
"Sorta?" Andrew questioned it with some attitude in his voice.
I grab my things "We have to go home." And that's exactly what we did.
