When I woke up I was lying on my bed by myself. Gordon told me to report to Henry once I got ready, through the intercom.
I was curious where Alex had gone but got washed and dressed non the less. When I opened the door there was a rose, a letter, and a pan of breakfast. On the platter was eggs, waffles toasted all golden brown like and strips of bacon. There was orange juice on the side with a straw.
I picked up the stuff and put it on my dresser and looked at the letter. Written on the front was my name in beautifully written script and designed. I did my best to not rip open the envelope and took out the note.
It read:
Happy birthday Abby, I hope you enjoyed your surprise gift from me because I spent all morning trying to get it right. I got the burns to prove it. Anyway eat up because that's not my only present to you. -Your truly, Alex.
I smiled at his name at the bottom and felt my cheeks brighten up like I had fever or something. Being locked up for so long I nearly forgot, April 7th was my birthday.
I put the note back in the envelope and placed in tilted on my dresser smiling. I turned back to the still steaming hot breakfast and walked over to my bed. I both savored and rushed my food down knowing I would have to meet Henry soon, but the food was just too good. Back when I was with Alex he could never cook this good.
Once I finished my food I grabbed the rose off the pan and sniffed it softly. It smelled like expensive perfume and my nose loved it. I placed the rose on my pillow and rushed to where I was supposed to meet Henry.
"Your late Abby." When I walked in some guys in suits along with Gordon, Liza, Doctor Luther, and Doctor Hartman sat around a big table.
"What's going on?" I asked walking in.
"Abby there's something you need to know, something about your past and about Alex." Doctor Luther said.
I sat down at a empty seat next to Henry. "My past?"
Doctor Luther nodded. "As you know by now Doctor Hartman is your biological Father and your mother Clara Edwards, who died trying to protect you from those who will try to harm you."
"Your mother and I only meant to protect you from those who will use your powers for violence and not a way to issue peace. All we ever wanted was to give you the normal life a young girl like you deserves but that wasn't ideal."
"So you chain me up, give me painful shots and test me constantly."
"I didn't have a choice orders are orders and if I disobeyed any I would be killed or relocated to a remote location. I wouldn't be able to protect you."
"Who said I needed protection?!" The wind picked up.
Henry put a hand on my shoulder. "Okay you two that's enough. Just take a breath and calm down." I took a deep breath.
"Liza here is your mother's sister she took the task to protect you after your mom passed." Luther explained.
I looked over to Liza who sat quickly and looked away from me.
I could sense she blamed me for the death of my mom. She did call me a monster numerous times.
"While we worried about you we lacked to notice the abilities your friend Alex presented. Once we did it was too late." Doctor Hartman said.
"What do you mean too late?"
"The people after you got to him first."
"We had trouble locating him but eventually we tracked him down and took him out of a machine in Port Towers, Virginia. He hadn't remembered anything after we got you." Henry said.
"We saw it best he stay in our facilities along with you to maintain safety. But as it seemed he hadn't awakened to his powers like you have and it remained dormant inside him." Doctor Luther added.
"So what are you trying to tell me?" I asked realizing I was unable to read the minds of anyone in the room.
"We believe the machine Alex when we got him was some cloning machine." Doctor Hartman said.
"Though we have no way of telling for sure, the machine was destroyed after we left."
"Wait a clone meaning there's more then one Alex?"
Henry nodded, "There was a break in yesterday and a person that looked exactly like him was reported to walk in the facility. The system allowed him access to his room but we were able to apprehend him. The only problem is truly knowing if we got the right guy. For all we know that could of been the real Alex or they both could be frauds."
"Your kidding right? I know Alex better than anyone and that's him"
"We're doing test to be sure but Abby we can't be sure of anything. Just try not to get attached okay."
"Your testing him!?" I stood up and ran out the room. I ran for the testing room. The closer I got the more screaming I heard. It was Alex.
I busted in the door. Alex was on a machine with some sticky pads on his body. I ran to him and used my powers to turn off the machine and unhook him from the machine. I quickly held him tightly as he shook in my arms. "A-Abby?"
I nodded, "Everything is going to be okay."
I heard Henry and the others tell the scientists to leave the room and they left with them. I sobbed and Alex held me til he passed out.
Definitely Alex and definitely the worst birthday ever.
