Chapter 8
(Not edited)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I stare at the jacket wrapped around me and glance up at my mom.
"I-It's Will's."
My response gets both of their attention.
"Who's that?"
"Will Lawrence? He lives across the street from us. He moved here recently and the principle put me as his buddy for school."
"Cynthia's and Sam's son? Oh my, his folks are the nicest people I've ever met!" my mom starts gushing.
"Is he your boyfriend?"
Yes, that is the first question my dad asks me.
I groan. "No dad, we're just friends."
"Why were you with Will? Was today a date?" My mom starts getting all giddy and excited.
"No. Kate called me and needed a ride, so Will and I picked her up and dropped her off at her house." I didn't want to tell my parents about Kate, so I simplified the story a bit.
"Then why did it take so long? Obviously it didn't take more than 3 hours to drop her off."
"We hung out and talked." It was the truth. I wasn't lying to them.
"Oh." That's all she says. She opens her mouth as if she's about to say something, but quickly shuts it.
"What mom?" She shakes her head. I sigh, I start walking away until my mom talks.
"I think this is good," she pauses, "I think meeting new people, especially of the different gender would be nice for you. I mean, you've never had a boyfriend before."
I cringe and turn around, my cheeks warming. "Mom! Different gender? Really? I have guy friends, and the last thing I need is a boyfriend."
"I just hate seeing you so antisocial. I want you to have fun. Go and like a boy, maybe even go on a date."
"Mom, guys don't like girls like me," I say softly. It is sad to admit, but it is the truth.
My dad clears his throat before butting in.
"Hey, if boys don't like you, they are absolutely weird messed up people, and it's their loss."
"Thanks dad, please go tell that to the whole junior grade." Sarcasm was strong in my voice.
"What about Anthony? Oh he's real cute!" my mom starts saying. Her calling guys my age "cute" makes me want to gag.
"Mom! I'm tired. And yes, Anthony asked me on a date and I finally said yes. I'm going to my room now," I said, dragging myself upstairs until I got into my room. I shut the door and grunt when I hear my mom squeal downstairs.
Sometimes I wonder why my parents are so cool with me going out, but almost immediately, I always remember their story. I still remember the first time I heard their happy love story.
My mom and dad were the sweetheart couple. Everybody knew them and everybody loved them. My dad used to be the quarterback of the varsity football team, while my mom was a quiet girl in school. Nobody would've expected my dad to ask my mom out. My dad bumped into her in the hallway, making her drop her books. They both kneeled down to get it, and apparently they had an unbreakable eye contact. When my mom explained it to me, it sounded so perfect--almost too perfect.
