The only thing you could hear in the dining room was the clanking of knives and forks on plates.
Having lost my appetite in the wind, I was mindlessly pushing my pasta back and forth with my fork.
'That was absolutely delish, mom!' Willow breathed out, slumping back into her chair.
'I'm glad you liked it darling.' She chuckled, then turned to me. 'What about you Summer? How's the tagliatelle?' Her cornflower blue eyes were aimlessly melting into mine.
'It's great.' I mumbled, chewing the shrimp I had shoved in my mouth.
'Mom, you said you had some news for us?' Willow enquired, placing her cutlery on her now empty plate.
'Yes I do.' Mom said excitedly as her eyes sparkled. 'I've met someone!' She smiled.
'Oh my gosh mom! You have a boyfriend!' Willow squealed clapping her hands excitedly.
'Well I wouldn't exactly call Rob my boyfriend-' she started.
'Oooh so his name is Rob.' Willow teased wiggling her eyebrows up and down.
'Yes. His name is Rob and he's the sweetest guy ever.' She sighed with satisfaction.
Not wanting to hear anymore, I stood up, my chair scraping against the wooden floor. Despite the the now forlorn look on my mother's face, I stormed up to my bedroom, not giving it a second thought.

When we banished dad out of our lives my sister, Willow became my mom and dad all in one person. Not because we didn't have our mom anymore, but because she spent her every waking hour earning enough money to pay the mortgage and buy groceries. Hunter had also managed to find a weekend job while he was still in school, and we were all grateful.
Sometimes I would think back to how I used to whine for the cool stuff other kids had, I would now love to scrub those memories from my brain. But I was a kid and that's ultimately what kids do; wish for what they can't have. But we managed to build our own home that we could thrive and survive in. Just us three girls, and Hunter.
I had been laying on my bed in the fetus position for I don't know how long now. It felt as if the whole world was against me. My thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a knock on my door.
'Summer?' The muffled voice came from behind the door.
'What.' I replied bluntly, wiping my eyes with the cuff of my pyjamas.
'Can we talk please?'
The silence was so thick, you could cut it with a machete. I then eventually decided to heave myself up off the bed. Trudging towards the door, I scrubbed at any remaining trace of tears I could find on my cheeks. I swung the door open to my startled mom who was holding a plate full of the fresh homemade cookies we had made. The warm smell wafted up my nostrils, tempting my tastebuds to water, as if on command.
