"Mom, there's something I have to tell you." I said, shifting uncomfortably in my seat. My mom stopped what she was doing and sat down in the chair next to me. She put her hand on my arm and looked into my eyes.
"What is it, honey? You know you can tell me anything." She says sweetly, her voice reassuring. I take a deep breath and close my eyes, not wanting to see her reaction.
"I-I'm gay." I squeaked, voice shaky and nervous. I feel her hand pull away from my arm as she takes a sharp breath in. I opened my eyes and looked at her. Her face was pulled into a look of disgust.
"M-mom?" I whispered. She stood up and went back behind the counter and began cooking again.
"Go to your room." She said flatly, a hint of disappointment in her voice.
"Mom, I-" I started. She slammed her hand down on the counter, making me jump.
"I told you to go to your room, John!" She shouted at me. I quickly stood up and ran to my room. I felt the tears flowing down my face as I shut my door and jumped into my bed. I hugged a pillow to my chest and just cried.
~~~~~~~TWO YEARS LATER~~~~~~~
I pull on my beanie and grab an apple from the kitchen as I walk out the house.
"Bye, mom!" I call through the house. I walk out and go about my way. I am a senior in high school. I walk down the street until I come to the corner where I meet Emori, my best friend.
"Hey, loser." She says, walking next to me and pulling her coat around her shoulder.
"Hey, princess." I reply. We gossiped on the way to school, mainly talking about how annoying the popular kids were. When we arrived at school, Emori and I sat down on the bench outside, waiting for the bell to ring for first hour. We talked some more until a group of people walked past us, causing me to look up at them. Within that group is Bellamy Blake, the guy I have had a crush on since freshman year. I can't help but stare. His perfectly tan skin, tiny freckles laid out across his face. His smile is so wide and bright. He catches my looking and gives me a wink and a smile. I feel my face get hot as I look down at the ground, a tiny smile spreading across my lips.
"Done staring, Murphy?" Emori joked, giving me a little smirk.
"Shut up, Emori." I shoot back. She laughs and leans against me.
"You should go talk to him." She suggests. I look at her and laugh.
"Are you serious? You're crazy." I shriek quietly at her. She giggles and rolls her eyes.
"Relax, Murphy. I'm kidding." I take a deep breath and scowl at her. She holds her hands up in defense as the bell rings. We stand up and walk into the building. I quickly walk to my locker and pull out my things for my first hour class. I shut my locker, but as I turn around, someone knocks all my books out of my hands and throws me to the ground.
"Watch where you're going, fag." Finn sneers. His little group snickers as they walk down the hallway. I get up and start to pick my things up off the floor. As I reached down to pick up my book, another hand meets mine. I pull my hand away and look up. Bellamy. He picks up my book and hands it to me.
"Here." He says, smiling at me. His deep voice makes me blush. I take the book from him and clear my throat.
"Um... Thanks." I manage to get out. God, he's so handsome.
"No problem. See you in fourth hour." He chuckles as he walks off down the hall. I compose myself and swallow the lump in my throat. I hurry down the hallway to my class, trying to get there before the late bell rings.
I walk into my class with my head down and sit down at my seat. I pull out my notebook and open it to a clean page just as Mrs. Griffin started her lesson. I managed to take a few notes, but I was having a hard time focusing. At the end of the class, I ended up with half a page of notes and a page full of doodles. I just drew a bunch of hearts around Bellamy's name and a little cartoon drawing of him. This crush is making me such a girl. I take the drawing and tuck it into my notebook, hoping no one saw it.
