Aurora knew it was wrong, but when she spotted that apple tree she had to get a couple for her family, even if she could get in serious trouble. It was extremely tall for an apple tree. Even if she did get herself in trouble, it's not like it'd be anything new. Or maybe it would. Aurora didn't often steal.
As she started over to sneak on the property, she was startled by a voice. Aurora was relieved to find it was her friend, James Robinson.
"You scared me!" she hissed at him.
"Nice to see you too, Aurora" he said with a smirk. We were best friends and always messed with each other. "What the devil are you doing?"
Part of her wanted to lie and say she wasn't sneaking onto the towns property and stealing apples, but he was her best friend and he wouldn't care. They usually always got into trouble together. "Just getting some apples.."
"Those aren't yours, ya know" he pointed out. Obviously, Aurora thought. But he understood. Both of their families were quite poor and they both always tried their best to get good food to eat. "Be careful".
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever." she said, going to the tree. As she climbed up the branches, she grabbed two apples, to share between the two of them. Nobody had to know. When Aurora came back, she offered him the other apple as she began to munch on hers.
"I won't be a part of your awful crime!" he said, pretending to be shocked. He took the apple and took a large bite into it. She laughed at his comment as they walked along a little dirt path. "You're lucky you offered me one, or else I woulda turned ya in" he said smiling; Aurora lightly elbowed his side.
"Whatever". They walked each other to their homes; they lived across from each other. "See you tomorrow!" she said, walking up the cracked stone path to her small abode. He waved as Aurora slipped through the door. She smiled. Aurora was glad to be friends with him.
When she got home supper was ready and she sat down.
"What did you and James do today?" Aurora's father asked.
"Hm, nothing much. Just walked around town". She couldn't tell him about the apples. Aurora may have gotten in trouble often but she still put effort into avoiding it.
They never really had interesting conversations at dinner. At least not after her mom left. She had gotten a disease, one that had yet to be identified. Many people in their town got infected by it and had to go to the hospital. None of them were seen again.
After washing the dishes, Aurora went to bed and stared at the ceiling until nodding off to sleep.
