The silent mutters of the doctor speaking would be one of very few last things that James and Aurora would hear. They both looked at each other in fear as the door swung open to reveal the doctor.
"So," he began, "I hear you've been snooping around the hospital and you found some things... I know you may be questioning this cure... I can explain".
They both looked at the doctor, to each other, and then at the doctor again.
"You're not sick. Neither of you. But you could still die"
"What?" Aurora whispered to herself "Then what's all of this?!".
"Well we were going to wait until later to announce to everyone the truth. But seeing as you too have performed the actions you did, I can see more than clearly that you are ready to fight. As I said, you are not sick, we only made you think you are. At some point before coming here I'm sure you noticed a sharp pain in your arm. Through months of research and different uses of technology, we've found ways to make it possible for our assistant here to be able to give people a shot without them seeing him, at least, not completely. This shot gave you symptoms of the nameless disease. We were keeping track of your previous behavior traits and chose people we believed could become great soldiers. You two, well, I think will definitely begin fighting. The people who aren't worthy of either armies... we are forced to let the symptoms kill off and infect their blood systems. We can't have them knowing that there's a cure"
"B-but that's so... cruel! You've got some real nerve, you know. You're just randomly choosing people and if they don't 'make the cut', you kill them?! You're mad! Absolutely ma-"
"Now, now, hold on. We aren't randomly choosing them we're using background information from their previous behavioral traits and-""That doesn't make it okay!" Aurora defended, practically yelling, "You can't just take the lives of innocent people, what, because they're not good enough for your little army or whatever this is? What kind of right do you have to take control of people's lives like this? Are you and whoever your working with certified or is this a problem needing to be to the government's attention?"
"Auri... calm down it'll be okay" James said, putting his hand on her shoulder. She only looked at him, at first a bit angrily but then a sad expression swept across her face.
"Oh you'll do just fine in your army. Though I'm afraid we must split you to up... you both belong on opposing armies as we do not have equal amounts so someone must transfer. That someone is you, Aurora"
"No.." James said, looking over protectively at Aurora. "W-we're sticking together"
"I'm afraid not" the doctor replied "It's just the way things are". He added a shrug. Aurora looked over to James, teary-eyed.
First I lost my mom to this sickness and now I'm losing my best friend too? I'm not dealing with this, Aurora thought. "I will find a way to escape this madness and I will leave alive and well and everything will go back to normal".
"Ah ah ah," the doctor started "No one will trust you. This 'Nameless disease' is one to be deadly and seriously contagious. You don't think your father would want you coming back home with such thing, now do you?".
Though Aurora had her doubts, she wanted to fight back so hard to make the doctor drop that stupid smirk on his face. "My father would accept me any way as long as I was back home with him, away from your dirty lies and deceit. Away from this horrid place where no living thing belongs". The doctor, now infuriated with Aurora's behavior, spoke up, his face slightly red.
"You will do as told and that is that. You are both going to be joining armies tomorrow on opposing sides and you can't do anything about it because you're in a new world now. A new life. New ways of functioning. And that is that".
The rest of that night was a blur. All Aurora could remember was her heavy breathing and the knot so tight in her throat she could barely speak. All she could remember was feeling insane and the doctor giving her and James a shot. She remembered everything a simple blur, and the last thing she saw before blacking out was James, lying beside her fast asleep.
