"I like how you turned out."

I suppose it only fits that I do a chapter on Starspeaker, seeing as I just talked about Sunnyflight.

The first time we were introduced to Fatespeaker, in the epilogue of The Lost Heir, I had a weird feeling that she would end up with Starflight. Of course, that may have been younger "think-inside-the-box me", who had no idea what homosexuality was, me pairing off the first boy and girl I saw, but I find it pretty ironic given their current situation. At the time I was an avid Sunnyflighter. People change.

I know it gets a lot of criticism, but people seriously need to back off and quit harassing this pairing. Starflight and Fatespeaker are just as compatible as Starflight and Sunny. He even remarks on alike they are, multiple times. Her bubbly nature is a perfect compliment to his awkward nervousness, much in the same way Sunny's is. In personality, they are equally compatible.

Having said this, I'd even hesitate to add that Starspeaker is more exciting than Sunnyflight - because she likes him.

His feelings may be a bit tangled at the moment - remember, he's only just getting over Sunny. The only thing harder than being in love is letting go, especially if that love has lasted for a long time. Starflight won't switch lovers overnight; he's going to take time to fall in love with her, and until then we have to be patient. If you had to ask me whether I thought he had a crush on her now, at the present point in the story, I would say no. But if you asked whether I thought they would end up together, I would say yes without hesitation.

It's pretty obvious she likes him. Anyone with any character experience would pick up on how threatened she felt by Sunny. And you'd have to be blind not to hear Sunny saying very clearly that she doesn't love Starflight "the way Fatespeaker does" in the epilogue of TBN.

And it's also plausible to assume that he has some feelings for her. Starflight doesn't spend TDS comparing Fatespeaker and Sunny, feeling conflicted over her and saying things like, "Well, there's always Fatespeaker," for no reason. He just needs time to nurture these feelings and come to accept that he and Sunny won't be together.

The best thing is that he has time. Fatespeaker helped him in the rainforest while Sunny was off gallivanting in the desert, and in Jade Mountain she seems pretty firmly glued to his side. If she can be so patient with him now, she'll definitely be able to continue. At the rate they're going, they'll be in love with dragonets before we know it - just like in Moon's vision.

Finally, to reiterate my last point, there is a reason Starflight is better with Fatespeaker than with Sunny. Not all crushes work out, and that's okay. Starspeaker are living proof that it's possible to love again and be happier than before.

So although it's not my OTP, Starspeaker is one of my favourite ships for the message it brings. Starflight and Fatespeaker work well together, and I look forward to seeing where they go in the future books.

10/10.
