"I love you, but..."

I couldn't find a better quote. Move along.

This isn't exactly a ship, but I've had a couple of people request this, and I feel like it should be addressed. There's a good deal of people who love the idea of aromantic Sunny, and I myself can respect this. Aromanticism and asexuality are rarely ever addressed in the media, and it'd be great to have a protagonist who doesn't fall head over heels in the story. Additionally, Sunny's about as far from the aro/ace stereotype as you can get: most of them are portrayed as cold or shy or serious. She's sweet and outgoing and... well, sunny.

Sadly, Tui confirmed in an interview that Sunny does have a soulmate somewhere out in Pyrrhia. Apparently it's a male SandWing who's been introduced, but one she hasn't met - which means it's most likely Meerkat, a resident of Possibility mentioned in Winter Turning. That's according to the Wikia, of course.

As much as I love the idea of aro/ace Sunny, I do think we should respect the canon. Tui has included several LGBT+ dragons already, and will helpfully continue to do so. Although I'd love to see someone as prominent as Sunny being portrayed as aro/ace, I will respect what the story has to say. I'm not going to parade around criticising an author for their own creation. I have faith that she will continue including LGBT in her books. It's very possible that we could get another aro/ace character in the series later on.

Moreover - I hate to bring this up - there's the whole Sunnyflight drama. Again. I've already talked about the whole message that it's possible to be happy and find love after rejection. I think that it'd be great to see that apply to both ends of the relationship. Sunny rejecting Starflight does not automatically make her aro/ace; it simply means that she didn't have feelings for him the way he had feelings for her. People need to understand that two completely compatible people might not get together, and that's okay. It's okay to say no simply because you don't want to. That's something a lot of people forget, especially in fiction.

Besides - there are a lot of other characters who could potentially be aro/ace. Jambu, Blister, Burn, Onyx, Flame, Mindreader, Mightyclaws, Hailstorm and Carnelian are all prominent deuteragonists who have never been seen with a lover or given any indication of having a crush. That's naming a few of the many dragons living in Pyrrhia. Perhaps someone could even propose the idea to Tui.

Don't get me wrong - supporting this headcanon is fine. It's a very good headcanon. But harassing a fellow fan or the author for shipping Sunny with another character is not. People have different opinions, and this one isn't going to harm anyone.

7/10.
