The next morning, it was time for new seniors to register for their classes. All students stood in line to talk to the new Guidance Counselor, Tamora Monroe. Liam sat in his chair, in front of Ms. Monroe and waited for her to be done with going over what his choices were for this year.
"Latin? You wanna take Latin?" She asks in disbelief.
Liam shrugs nervously, "I like Latin."
Placing the papers down and intertwining her fingers together, Ms. Monroe leans forward to really look at him.
"Liam, who told you to take Latin?"
Liam sighs softly in defeat, "Look, everyone says it's an easy A, and my GPA sucks." He explains.
"Well, I applaud you wanting to raise your GPA, especially while applying to colleges. But easy is not the path you should be taking." Ms. Monroe states gently.
"It...It's been a really hard year for me." Liam looks down in woe.
"You want to talk about your girlfriend, guidance hours are posted. Let's talk about your schedule." She says and goes back over the schedule with Liam. Liam nods in understanding.
"How does Spanish sound?" Ms. Monroe asks.
Liam thinks about and nods, "Bueno."
"Excelente." She smiles and writes down in his file.
Next was Corey. Corey waits for her to be done looking over his choices and wasn't really liking how she was looking at him with a gentle, compassion look.
"As I said, I'm here to guide you. Not push, not prod. Guide." She says.
"You think AP Calculus is a little out of my league?" Corey asks, getting the hint.
"Look, I understand the need to keep up, to be recognized or noticed. Everybody feels invisible sometimes." She says.
"I don't. The one thing I never feel is invisible." Corey says quickly.
"I meant metaphorically." Ms. Monroe says.
"Literally, too. I'm here. Right here. You can see me, right?" He says nervously.
"Yes, I can see you, Corey. I've seen a lot of things at this school, even when other people have their eyes closed."
"Are you seeing anything right now?"
"Yes." She nods and leans back in her chair, "I'm seeing Creative Writing. Have you thought about that?" She asks.
For once, Corey was speechless. He actually liked the idea of being in creative writing.
Next, Mason sat in the chair and explained what he wanted to do.
"Perfect, Mr. Hewitt. You've given this a lot of thought." She smiles at Mason.
Mason smiles and plays with his fingers, "I give everything a lot of thought."
"And yet, you've never come into my office and shared any of those thoughts." She tilts her head in curiosity at Mason.
"You think I should?" Mason asks.
"I just want you to know that I'm here for you guys. I know I haven't been in the position all that long, but I also know that students at this school have seen and been through things that don't exactly come with easy explanation."
"I'll keep that in mind." He reaches for his schedule, but she stops him from taking it. Mason frowns and slowly goes back to his seat.
"I take this very seriously, Mason. Anything we talk about in here stays between you and me. It won't go any further."
