Chapter 5

_______________________

It was difficult - and risky - having to take care of another person's house whilst convincing everyone they knew that they were with you.
Oftentimes there would be phone calls from people who didn't know anything about the current situation, and Dan would just have to pray that he could pass off as Phil when answering them.
It wasn't like he regretted what he had done, but Dan's life had come to what seemed like a standstill. He wasn't depressed or lonely. He just felt as if he had gone past some critical point of no return. Kind of like the mindset one may get when they feel they've screwed up, so they just tell themselves, "Oh well, I might as well go all the way now".
His communication with the outside world was seldom. He lived like a secluded animal, concerned only for his survival and comfort. He had given up on YouTube entirely, although he had checked some of the comments on Phil's channel to see how his fans were reacting to his sudden disappearance.
He felt a pang of hunger in his stomach. He made some chili con carne with the mincemeat from his freezer and sat down to eat it, scrolling through his phone and looking at past pictures and text messages.

My parents are going away for a month. Do you wanna stay with me? :) Phil had texted.

Sure. You could help me with some videos, Dan had replied.

His unfortunate friend hadn't known a thing, and now he was gone.
He stared at the screen for atleast two minutes, holding the food in his mouth and wondering if he regretted his behaviour or not.

He waited atleast a week before calling his grandmother to ask if his contributions had helped her.
"It's been going wonderfully," she said, and Dan could tell she was genuinely smiling. "People are telling me how tasty the pies have been this week. I've made some extra money."
Dan's eyes lit up like a wild animal about to pounce on its prey. "Really?"
"Yes! I've sold a great deal more than usual. In fact, I sampled some myself and it was excellent! It's all thanks to you, Daniel."
"No problem," Dan said. "I'll give you a hand any time you need some good ingredients. I think I'm gonna go now. See you soon."
"See you!"
He gently put the phone down.
Dan had no control. He couldn't stop the horrific giggling. He was like one of those crazy villains you see in superhero movies, except more realistic. It wasn't that weird, maniacal laughter, just an uncontrollable snigger that got more intense as he thought more and more about what he had done. Innocent, unsuspecting members of society were purchasing and consuming human meat, and genuinely enjoying it.
Who could blame them? Dan thought. It's delicious.
He knew it was fucked up, but he didn't care. Others cared about the immorality of cannibalism, but to Dan, it was no different from going to the supermarket and buying beef burgers or sausage rolls, except cheaper because he had produced the meat himself.

Dan cast his mind back to the thoughts he'd had the other day, wondering if he regretted this whole thing or not.
Then he just smirked to himself. As if, he thought. Sure, being friends with Phil had been fun. He'd even been quite attracted to him. But that was over now, and all he had left of him were photos, text messages and the meat in his freezer. At least Phil was never able to leave him now.
