I feel metal hit the back of my knees and knock me into my seat. Alex, Benji and myself are swept up. I close my eyes. I grab ahold of the handle bar to try stop my hands shaking.
I breath deeply and open my eyes. I look next to me to see Benji awkwardly trying to make conversation with Alex. None of us really know Alex separated from Jake, and sometimes it seems like Alex doesn't want us to.
Benji looks to me.
Benji: Fun, right?
I nod. He can tell I'm not comfortable...
Benji: You know, when I was little I was scared of chairlifts... Not assuming that you are. My Mom used to tell me to count the pillars to calm myself.
I smile politely.
Jade: Thanks.
We continue to climb the mountain. I glance down and we're now much higher than I thought off the ground. I try closing my eyes again, but whenever I do I see that devil laughing.I looked up at the chain above the chair and suddenly became extra aware of the clutter clatter sound of the chain. It begins to moan. I feel my jaw shaking so I start biting hard.
Maybe I should take Benji's advice. Every fifty feet there was a pillar which had two clamps that the cable would run through. I began his counting technique.1...

I glance down. Dumb move. We were at least 60 feet off the ground. I look ahead and see Dave, Morgan and Sarah's chair just reaching the highest point of the lift. They pass through a pillar.
I can hear them talking.Dave: Is that supposed to be leaking?
Morgan: What's leaking?
I squint over at clamps and notice some sort of hydraulic fluid was pouring down the pillar to the snow.
What the hell.
Sarah: Oh my god, look...The three looked back at the cable running through the clamp a few feet behind them when a sickening ping sound echoes across the mountain and the chair jerks.
Kayla lets out a yip in the chair in front.
Benji: What the hell? Alex, can you see what's going on up there?
Alex: Not really.
My heart is pounding and my mouth is dry. I quickly dart my gaze toward the chain above Dave and Sarah's chair and I see it... The fibres of the cable were breaking. I scream.
Me: The chain's breaking!
Morgan gasps and Karey, startled, looks back to me.
Sarah: WHAT THE FUCK?!Everyone looks back at me as a series of unexplainable pings pierce the air...
...The cable above them suddenly snaps, sending Sarah, Dave and Morgan plummeting 70 feet to the ground. Everything goes into slow motion and I see their safety bar unhinge mid-air. The three seperate out of the chair as they each hit the hard snow with a sickening thud.Morgan
Dave
Sarah
Then the chair, landing right on top of them mashing them into the snow.
I hear Robyn let out a blood curling scream as the snapped cable flicks up through the air at the chair behind the fallen cart; slicing Kayla cleanly in half down the middle.Jake and Karey are sprayed with blood and both begin to scream.
Kayla's bottom half slips out from under the safety bar, and her top half slumps down in the chair.
The chairs begin to quickly slide backwards, but just as they do, the clamps at each pillar all secured themselves. Like a seatbelt does when pressure is applied, saving the other carts and making the lift stationary.
The entire area becomes a morbid symphony of screams.
