The Chairlift

Coldness spread across me.

Is this what death feels like?

I felt hands wrap around my legs.

Is this the devil?

Nope. It's Alex.

I felt myself getting pulled and the coldness swiftly left my body and brightness flooded my surroundings... I was being pulled out of a pile of soft snow.

Laughter filled my ears and I saw the group laughing hysterically at me.

Alex: Are you ok?

Me: I think so.

Claire: Are you hurt?
Me: No, I'm good.
Alice slid down the hill gracefully and came to a stop next to me.
Alice: Smart...
Morgan: You looked so funny!
Brandon: Shut up, Morgan.
Robyn: Yeah, Morgan. Nobody even likes you.
Claire: Guys, can you back off Morgan for five minutes?
Robyn: Oh she gets seven hours when I sleep.
Ysabela: Stop being a bitch, Robyn.

Robyn: But being a bitch is what I do best.

I looked over to see Morgan looking quite depressed.
Me: You good, Morgan?
Morgan: Look, can we just go?
Karey: I'm sure that can be arranged.

Dave: Why the hell are we just standing around?

Sarah: Oh my god! That's what I was gonna say!
Karey: Why don't we just finally get on the chairlift! It almost is closing time!
Benji: That's the best idea I've heard all day.

Brandon: Then let's fucking go! What are we waiting for?

Ysabela: Well, Jade just nailed herself.
Me: No, I'm good. Let's go. Parks closing soon, we should try to get another ride in.

We all make shuffled our way towards the chairlift as fast as our heavy feet would carry us. I looked up at the chairlift, stretching up into the alps. It looks a lot longer from down here. The sun peeks over the mountain peak, it's warmth quickly escaping. Suddenly my surroundings darkened and I began to hear a ringing in my ear. The sound of the group was suddenly muffled and I felt a rush of air whistle past me. I felt suddenly weightless, alone when suddenly-
Benji: Jade!
I look over and see the whole group now 50 meters ahead, except for Benji waiting for me. He smiles.
Benji: You coming, or are you just gonna chill there?
Me: Sorry!

I shook my head and raced over. What's up with me all of a sudden?
Benji: You feeling ok? You look kinda dazed.
Jade: I'm fine, just tired I guess.

We catch up to the others and I see no line to the chairlift. We approach the operator.
Karey: Where were you?
Me: Sorry, I'm just slow.
Operator: Whoa, slow up guys.
Karey: What's wrong?
Operator: The chairs closed for maintenance, it's been breaking down all day.
Dave: Thanks a fucking lot we are never gonna get to use the chairlift now thanks to you, Jade.
Ysabela: You're the one who pushed her!
Dave: Was I talking to you?
Sarah: He wasn't talking to you.
Jimsey: Hey, back off man.
Kayla: So... What do we do now?
Robyn looked over to Karey who then nodded.
Robyn and Karey stepped forward to the operator.
Robyn: Must be boring sitting in that booth all day. You get lonely?

Benji: What are they doing?
Jake: What they do best.

Operator: Uh, sometimes... Depends on how long my shift is.
Karey gasps and grabs his bicep.
Karey: All that lever pulling's got you buff!
Operator: Heh heh. Well, it's actually a button... But I do workout.
Robyn: Oh it shows!
She strokes his chest.
Robyn: You're just so big.
Karey: Well...
They step back.
Karey: It's a shame you won't let us take one last ride-
Operator: No. I could get fired.
Karey: Couldn't you be naughty just for us?
Robyn grabs his hand.

Robyn: C'mon Mr. Operator...

She presses his hand against her chest.

The operator let out a groan.

Karey: Pleeease?
Operator: ... Ok... One ride.

The operator goes inside and flicks some switches turning on the chairlift. Karey looks back to us and winks.

Operator: Go. Before I change my mind.

Everyone quietly celebrates and scoots over to the pads.

Dave and Sarah step in front of Robyn and Karey.
Sarah: Can we please go first?

Robyn: Well I-

Dave: When she says that she means we are going first.

Robyn: oh, ok?
The operator looks at Dave.
Operator: That dude's pretty beefy, you're gonna need a lot of weight on the opposite side to balance it out.
Everyone turned to Morgan who sighed and stepped forward to the loading platform.
Claire: I'll go with Ysabela by ourselves at the back.
Operator: Keep your hands and feet inside at all times, do not swing the chairlift. Once you get on there is no turning back. The chairlift takes you right up the top of devil's mountain so you have to ski down from the very top.
The chair swung around and knocked Morgan, Dave and Sarah off their feet.
Morgan was on the far left, Sarah in the middle then Dave on the far right.
They began their climb up the mountain.
Dave: YEAH!
Sarah: finally!

Operator: Next!

Up stepped Kayla, Jake and Alex.
Karey: Fuck all these pushers. I'm going.
Me: No, please. Stay with me.
Karey: I fucking got us here. Sit with your friends! I'll see you up there.
Karey jumped beside Kayla, Jake and Alex.

Kayla looked at her weird.
Karey: Look I just want to get up the mountain... Alex, take another one.
Alex: But-
Karey: Can't you go 5 minutes without being Jake's lapdog?
Brandon: Ooooh.
Jake: Alex, babe, it's ok. I'll see you up the top.
Alex: ...Uh... Yeah...
He steps back and Karey takes his place. Karey looks back to me as they approach the loading dock.

Karey: I'll meet you at the top!
At that moment they were whisked away.
Operator: Next!

Up stepped Alice, Benji and Jimsey. I don't know what came over me, but I decided to grab Benji.
Me: Wait!
Benji: What?
Me: Can you please go up with me?
Benji: Um... Sure? Alice, do you mind?
Alice: Yes. But go ahead if you want to...
He stepped back and let Brandon take his place.
Alice: Benji!
Benji: Don't worry! Jade's just nervous, you do this all the time. I'll see you soon!
Alice: Ok... Jade take care of him!
Benji: Love you.
Alice smiles.
Alice: Love you too.
Up they went.
It was just me, Benji, Alex, Claire and Ysabela.
Operator: Next!
I shuffled over to the platform. I was uncontrollably shaking. Why am I such a scaredy cat today? I've used chairlifts before, what's wrong with me?
I looked down and take a deep breath. I see on the floor an ad, "The Devil's Mountain, Park City, Utah"

It had a picture of the devil laughing saying in a speech bubble "I'll see you real soon".
Benji: Jade, are you ok?
I try to speak but nothing comes out, so I just nod.
Why do I want to cry?
