chapter 15 → "peace"
⎯LOVE is fresh in the hands of Alex and Miles, and they're still getting used to it. And surprisingly, so are their classmates.
They, the once judgmental and closed-minded students, are coming to realize that they both really enjoy having each other by their sides and giving each kisses on the cheek every-once-in-a-while. They are actually happy to see Baby Blue to be something else but moody.
He's all smiles now, holding pinkies with Miles while walking each other to their classes.
They can't get their hands off each other, especially in English. Since the pair now sit next to each other, they would occasionally hold each other's hands while doing class work, or if they were feeling brave, they would place a hand on the other's thigh.
They are so content, at peace, that the school doesn't hate them.
All but one person.
Matt feels queasy as he sees the couple being so close, so engrossed with each other. Like hyper focus, they forget about their surroundings, the only things that matter are them. Two makes the love work.
Although he shouldn't feel this way, Matt feels slightly jealous. Jealous at the fact that Miles no longer pays attention to him, doesn't call him on the phone just to ramble about his shit day. He can't wrap his mind around the fact that someone like Baby Blue could get a lover and he couldn't, either.
Pitiful.
Matt can still clearly recall the day that Miles was forced to sit up front with Alex. He acted so cold, so repelled by him. Just sitting next to him literally made him morph into a completely different person. It's weird to see the two so inseparable.
So when Miles goes up to sit with Matt during their lunch break, his actions seemed rash, he acted like Miles was disturbing him with his presence. Which is correct.
"Hey, Matt. Alex isn't here today, too busy being sick at home," Miles says softly as he pokes his food with his plastic fork.
Matt feels his heart clench. Was he a replacement?
Nonsense, but that's what it seems to be.
All that he could do was nod, and he didn't say a word after that. He simply put in his earbuds and played a loud song, mimicking the other boy's actions.
He felt so out of place, uncomfortable. He was only there to make the other not look like a loner.
He left shortly after. And Miles did the exact thing and started following the other to his next class.
"Mi, why are you following me?" He looked at him with a piercing stare that it felt like his skin was being picked at. It made he feel so intimated.
Truth was, he didn't like being alone. He's too used to having someone else's presence. But that someone else isn't here, so he has to have someone else to fill that spot.
Matt was the same. He didn't like being alone, not really. He was already accustomed to the feeling of having Miles by his side, just because that's how things were. The tradition was broken due to a certain someone.
For all he cared, he hoped he stayed sick.
"Do you even have band? No, so leave me alone or I'll beat you with my drumsticks,"again with that sharp tone, the fire in his eyes, that same heavy feeling in his chest. Everything is slowly crumbling away.
Miles was of course distraught by his cruel tone, who wouldn't. And that threat, the boy was extremely skilled at drumming, he didn't want his body to be practiced on. His mouth was ajar, thinking of something to say. It was already too late when Matt started to walk away.
"What's up with him?"
He shrugged, taking out his phone to dial Alex.
