Once safely outside, we are finally given an opportunity to catch up on each other’s lives. Jessica talks about how she went to stay with Jacob for two weeks in the country. His parents were away most of the summer which meant they had the place to themselves. It’s pretty obvious what they may have been doing the whole time. And no, in case you’re wondering, we do not all start squealing like excited pigs as the novelty of their intimate relationship has worn of now due to the fact that she lost her virginity to him two summers ago when she was fifteen. Although that may seem a bit young, they both loved each other and had already been dating for a year so they decided to fuck what everyone else thought and well…fuck each other. I doubt Jess would appreciate my wording there. She’s always been quite a romantic and deems ‘made love’ to be more of an appropriate term. Not that it makes much difference. From what she told us it sounded pretty damn uncomfortable and therefore I would rather postpone that activity for as long as possible. Of course I’m all for pre-marital sex- much to the disappointment of my authentically religious school- but I personally do not understand the urgency.
I start telling them about my extremely tedious trip to Rome with my parents, when I notice Mila’s agitated expression and body language and decide it’s probably best if I let her get out what she’s clearly so desperate to say.
‘What now, Mila’, I sigh overdramatically.
She gives me an apologetic smile before looking down and studying her hands nervously. Jess and I exchange a look. This should be interesting.
‘Basically my brother came back from university and he bought a friend with him…’ she mumbles slowly. Uh oh; I know where this is heading.
‘Let me guess- you’re hopelessly in love with him however he doesn’t pay any attention to you and you need us to come up with a plan to catch his attention,’ I tease, only half joking.
She frowns at me and I automatically feel bad. Jessica shoots a warning glance in my direction before turning back to Mila.
‘Ignore her; it’s probably her time of the month,’ Jess smirks. Now it’s my turn to frown, practically everyone in school knows about my long lasting and practically never ending periods. It’s pretty blatantly obvious when I’m ‘on it’ however today happens to be one of those rare days when I don’t have to rush to the bathrooms everyone second to check. It’s annoying as the first day of the academic year is practically the only time the toilets here are actually clean and I’m quite upset I won’t have the opportunity to appreciate this rare luxury. The rest of the year there subjected to some pretty grim vandalism. I let this comment slide and smile encouragely (sarcastically) at Mila letting her know she may continue.
‘Actually,’ she says leisurely, obviously enjoying Jess and I’s tension ‘we’re dating.’
Well, I was not expecting that. I remain startled for a few seconds however am bought back to reality when Jessie shrieks deafeningly. My ears ring and roll my eyes at the girl’s sentiments.
‘I knew it’, Jessica screeches once again, temporarily deafening me, ‘I knew from the second you entered that hall you were in love.’
‘I’m not in love, I barely know the guy…,’ Mila denies unconvincingly. We both raise our eyebrows. Even I can see from the glint in her eyes that she’s fixated on this guy. It’s not love, obviously, were only seventeen for God’s sake, then again, it’s definitely more than just a little crush.
‘Okay maybe I am’ she hesitantly utters. She anxiously looks from Jess to me then back to Jess, obviously waiting for some sort of reaction.
‘I’m so proud of you baby’ Jess exhales, her hand over her heart. I stop myself from groaning at the cliché and grin at Mila.
‘Me too, hun,’ I say genuinely, surprising myself as well as my two best friends. ‘But you better warn him that if he hurts you, I will hunt him down. We all know what happens when someone gets on my bad side,’ I smile, recalling the time in year ten when Mila’s crush told her she was too stupid for him. Let’s just say he stayed home recovering for a few days after that. But then again, so did I as I was suspended for two days. Oh well, he deserved it. They smile too, obviously remembering that little ‘incident’.
‘That’s more like the Anna I know,’ Mila giggles, evidently relieved I haven’t started teasing her yet. Just you wait, sweetie, just you wait. We sit in comfortable silence for a few more minutes, still recovering from Mila’s news.
‘So,’ Jessica exclaims after a while, a mischievous grin appearing on her face, ‘when can we meet him?'
