Meeting Matt

The Saturday morning after our first week back at school, aka prison, Mila and I sit in her purple spacious bedroom, patiently waiting for Jess to arrive so we could go and meet their boyfriends. Why do I get the feeling I'm the fifth wheel?

'So what time shall we leave?' I question as Mila nervously fidgets with her jacket.

She doesn't answer and after a few seconds I decide I should do something about her obvious anxious state.

'Mila?'

'Mhmm' she mumbles in reply. Staring at the floor like one of her worst nightmares has just come true.

'Are you going to tell me what is so clearly bothering you?'

This question snaps her back into reality. After staring at me blankly for a few seconds she sighs and unconvincingly replies 'just nervous.'

'Oh' I reply, surprising myself with my disappointment at the anti climax.  Maybe I'm turning into the girls at my school who are so desperate for drama that they'll create some themselves by starting some stupid rumor. Now that really would be a nightmare come true.

I hate forcing people to talk about their feelings; I'm more of a sit-there-awkwardly-not-quite-knowing-what-to-do girl, so we sit in deafening silence until the doorbell rings.

'I'll get it' Mila jumps up, blatantly trying to keep herself distracted. A minute later Mila re appears, followed by Jess. I jump up and hug her, even though I saw her yesterday. Mila is absent mindly chewing on her fingernails so I take the opportunity to whisper 'something's up' in Jess' ear. Mila is slightly suspicious, even in her current state, as both the girls know how much I hate hugs.

I pull away and Jess, being the cool and confident complete opposite of me, acts like nothing happened. We plop ourselves down on Mila's soft double bed while she stays at the door. Me and Jess exchange a look before Jess gently asks 'Mi, is something up?'

Mila looks up at her; glances back at me and turns her attention back to the light pink duvet cover.

'Yes' she says bluntly. Suprised, we wait for her to continue. She sits down in between us before beginning her rant. 'Basically you know how we're meeting Matt at Starbucks today?' Jess and I nod cautiously. 'I texted him this morning to confirm the time and he didn't reply even though I know he read it.' She takes a deep breath and we stare at her expectantly waiting for more. 'And...?' we both question at the same time.

She looks as us confused and that’s when we realize, that was it, that’s whats been bothering her all morning. 'Why would he do that?' she mumbles, almost in tears.

I resist the urge to burst out into laughter however judging by the way Jess' shoulders are violently shaking, she obviously failed.

'What?' Mila pouts clearly puzzled and unamused.

I shrug innocently however my facade doesnt hold up for longer than a few seconds and I start laughing along with Jess.

Did I forget to mention that Mila is possibly the biggest drama queen ever?

'Maybe he doesn't like me anymore,' she mumbles.

Jess stops laughing when she hears the genuine worried tone of Mila's voice, however her smile remains. After a while I gradually begin to calm down.

'Maybe his dog ate his phone while he was typing a reply?' I can't help but tease. Jess shoots me a look but I can see the amusement in her eyes.

Mila opens her mouth to reply however doesn’t get a chance before Jess interupts.

'We need to go,' Jess randomly interjects, clearly changing the subject on purpose.

I grab my bag and stand up however Mila crosses her arms and refuses to budge.

'What if he doesn't turn up?' she questions.

'Then it's his loss' Jess replies. 'Anyway we're meeting Jacob there soon so we need to hurry up' she adds.

'I'm not coming,' she exclaims stubbornly, 'tell him I'm ill; swine flu or something.'

I'm just about to think of a comeback argument when there's a knock on the bedroom door.

'Come in' Mila shouts as her mum enters.

'Hi girls' she smiles at us before turning to her daughter.

'Someone's at the door for you' she tells Mila. I can't help but notice the hostility between them.

'Tell them I'm asleep' she replies grumpily.

I have to agree though; whoever it is clearly thinks they are important enough to disturb our Saturday morning, just when we were about to go out as well.

Her mum frowns 'I can't, I've already told them I would come and get you.'

Mila sighs and reluctantly gets off the bed. She gestures for us to follow her downstairs so we can leave straight after she's got rid of whoever is at the door. We reach the bottom of the stairs and after running her hand through her hair, Mila hesitantly opens the door. From the way she steps back, I can tell it’s not someone she was expecting.

'Hey babe' I hear a low voice say. 'Sorry I didn't reply to your text; I wanted to surprise you.'

'Umhh hhh-ello c-come in' she stutters awkwardly. Mila opens the door wider and my eyes widen.

Wow. He's hot.

Wait. Did I just call my best friend’s boyfriend hot?
