It's Been So Long: A Grayson Dolan Fanfic

It's Not That Easy...

I walk downstairs and towards the front door. I see the twins through the glass pane in my white door and I unlock it, signaling for them to come in. It was definitely weird seeing them back in my house. It was two years ago that we would sit and play video games on my couch, acting like the best of friends and now it was like we barely knew one another. They came in awkwardly, not really knowing what to say. "I thought you had something to tell me Grayson. Isn't that why you were pelting rocks at my window, trying to break the glass," I say in a clipped tone.

"Yeah we did. It's just-it's just weird being back here. In your house, Melrose," Grayson said hesitating.

"Well, it wouldn't have been so weird if you guys oh I don't know, told me you were leaving and kept in contact with me?" I sarcastically remarked.

"Please, we don't want to argue, we just want to talk," Ethan pleaded. While part of me was saying to kick them out of the house and continue to hold a grudge against them, another part of me was curious as to find out what happened.

"Fine," I sigh, "you can talk. You have to tell me everything. From the beginning."

"Thank you," Gray sighed in relief, "It started out about 2 months prior to us leaving..."

Flashback in Grayson's POV

I was lying on my couch waiting for Ethan to finish editing the intro to the new video we were about to post when I got a call. It was from an unknown number. I hesitantly picked up the phone, "Hello?"

"Hi, is this Grayson Dolan?" a warm and kind voice spoke on the other end.

"Yes, this is him, um who are you?" I was expecting a prank call but it turned out to be something else that completely changed our careers.

"Hi, this is Ms. Summer, secretary for Brian Robbins, the creator and CEO of AwesomenessTV."

"Yes, um, hello, uh, hi, I am very excited to talk to you but why have you contacted me?"

"We love the content you and your brother put out every week and we see your numbers growing each week. People, especially teenage girls, are pulled into your special boyish charm. We would like to sign you to AwesomenessTV and have you as one of our clients. You guys are getting big, but you guys can go even bigger. With the help of us. What do you say?"

I had no idea what to say. I was dumbstruck and speechless. A huge company like AwesomenessTV wanted to sign a pair of twins from NJ? This was completely surreal. "Can I get my brother on the phone with you?"

"Of course! He's involved in the process too!" I quickly grab Ethan and filled him in on all of the details. He was getting just as excited as I was. He, however, was a little bit skeptical. "Wait a minute, you're saying you'll sign us right now? What's the catch?"

Ms. Summer spoke once again, "There's no catch Ethan. It is just us signing you guys. You guys can continue to make whatever content you desire and we'll help grow your following. Are you in?" After more minutes of disscussing and bringing our mom to hear everything said we came to the decision of signing with AwesomenessTV. Ms. Summer was thrilled and said, "Great! You guys will move out to LA and will be able to have in person meetings with us!"

I was confused and puzzled. "Wait, move out to LA? I thought we could stay here." In the background I heard Ethan muttering, "I knew there was a catch."

"Sweetie, it's not a catch. It's part of the job. Every person in the entertainment industry moves out to LA. You do want to do this right?" It was the opportunity of a lifetime and we couldn't pass it up. Our once shot was being handed to us on a silver platter. "Ok. Fine. We'll move out to LA."

And so we did. Within the next two weeks, we packed up everything and headed out on our own and moved halfway across the country.

End of Flashback

That explained why Gray and Eth moved to LA but I was still confused on why they would cut me out. "That explains one part but not the other. Why did you guys cut me off? I was your best friend."

Both flinched when I said was and then Gray proceeded, "You wanna know why we cut you off? It was because it was too hard. It was too hard saying goodbye to our best friend and the best thing that ever happened to us. We wanted to protect you from getting hurt because we were leaving you. So be mad at us, okay! Be mad for trying to protect you." Grayson's voice has raised until he was practically shouting.

"You wanted to protect me from getting hurt. Unbelievable. Clearly you guys did a fucking terrible job because look where we are. Thanks to you guys cutting me off, which was supposed to save our relationship, our friendship is ruined and I have no interest in speaking to either of you right now," I snarled.

Ethan said calmly, "We wanted to do what was best for you. I never said it would save our friendship but we thought that no interaction with us would help you heal and move on faster. Don't think that this wasn't hard on us too. We didn't even have a best friend to talk to everyday. At first, and for a long time, we had no one."

I was burning with anger at this point, "What bullshit! It was soooo hard for you guys to be the most attractive teenage boys in America, have a massive following, make money, and be in every girl's fantasy. Yeah it's sooo hard. Boo-hoo! I don't give a crap about you! You guys made me suffer and caused me pain when you were trying to do just the opposite. Great job! Seriously!" I spat sarcastically. At this point, I broke and all my crazy emotions were being let out. I had no control over them and all the words tumbled out of me.

Both the boys looked stunned at my angry speech. As soon as the words came out of my mouth, however, I immediately realized what I said and regretted it. Obviously they had it tough, maybe even tougher than me. They were all by themselves in LA fending for themselves and they struggled for fame. I tried to take back my words but it was too late. Ethan said, "Ok, if that's how you feel about us, we'll leave. Thanks for talking," he said with a tint of sadness in his voice. He started out the front door never once looking back. Grayson stayed and studied my face before saying, "Wow! Never thought that would come out of your mouth. Now I know how you really feel." His forehead creased together and his eyebrows were furrowed as he frowned and he too walked out the front door, stomping with each footstep.

I was too stunned by my own words. I can't believe I told them that. I was obviously mad at them but I did not mean what I said. It was just my emotions taking over my thought process. I was so regretful and I ran to the door.

I was left again to the voices in my head and soft cries I let out as I looked through the glass pane to see the twins walking out on me: this time because of me. I crumpled to the floor, bringing my hands to my face and sobbing as I wished for my best friends back.
