The day is June 17, 2045. The sun rises over the hill onto the quiet household of Harold Bridge. Just another peaceful day out in rural Indiana.
Harold woke up to the sound of his alarm. The 29 year old man groaned as he got out of bed and started his day, unaware of the events to come.
As he made his way into the kitchen, Harold turned on the small television resting on the counter. He listened to the forecast, high of 73, mostly cloudy. A perfect day, one might say. While listening to the news of the ongoing war, Harold make himself a hearty breakfast of bacon, eggs, and toast.
When Harold sat down, the news reporter stuttered with words of grave importance.
The reporter, finally gaining his bearings, stated in a cool voice, "This is an emergency to everyone in the nation. Russia and Korea have launched nuclear missiles aimed at most of the states. If you are watching this, get to safety IMMEDIATELY!"
Harold, bewildered as he was, dashed to the cupboards and grabbed as much food and water as he could carry. He ran to the basement, opened the door, and threw it all down there.
Before Harold closed the door, he saw something small falling in the distance. His eyes filled with terror as he realized what it was. The nuclear hellfire was here. Harold slammed the door and ran down to the deepest point of his basement. Harold turned on a light and started to prepare for his long time underground. He felt a strange force push him back towards the wall. He felt like he was on fire. Harold blacked out before he felt anymore pain.
