We soon approach the elevator and he hits a button on the other side of the wall that I hadn't noticed before. My stomach growls a little louder this time and it is getting pretty hard to ignore.
"Hey Alex, before I go to training, can we please go get some of dat good food loots? I am starving and I haven't had breakfast yet." I whine.
"No, you should have waken up earlier if you had wanted breakfast. All you tributes do is complain "Im hungry!' or 'Mentor... this guy is trying to kill me again.' If you really wanted food, you should have told me when we passed the bakery." Alex replies sternly. He looks straight into my pleading eyes and shakes his head no. We walked past a bakery? Man I really need to become more observant. I am actually missing a huge portion of my 'Great Capitol Experience.'
The elevator reaches the floor that was selected and we walk down the long hallway until we get to a huge glass door. Alex pushes hard on the metal bar and the doors swing open rather quickly.
"Ugghhhh." I complain. My stomach growls again and hope that Alex heard. I hear him groan and soon the stubborn mentor turns around.
"Fine!" he yells, clearly exasperated. "If you want food that badly, go to the bakery up ahead and grab a bagel or something!"
"YES!!!" I start sprinting back down the long hallway, worried that Alex will change his mind. I nearly skid to a stop when I see a large green map. I locate the nearest bakery and start running in that direction.
Turn left, I remind myself, then right. After walking for about a minute and a half... I stumble upon a large bakery. The opaque doors open automatically and I walk in to see a nearly desolate looking room aside from a large metal machine hanging on the far left wall. I thought that the Capitol was supposed to have fancy... well, everything.
I walk over to it and press a glowing red button. The metallic machine sparks and a womens voice echos through a speaker on the side. "Please request desired food."
"Uh...." I think. This is fairly simple. "One lightly toasted bagel....... please." I add at the last second. Im not sure if this is just a fancy capitol machine, or if someone else is on the end of this confusing contraption.
"Please wait the required 2.79 minutes to acquire your lightly toasted bagel." The last part sounds very stiff and automatic so I guess it is just a prerecorded machine. While waiting... I pull a small golden coin. attached to a thin black string, out from my pocket and slide it around my neck. I hope the peacekeepers will allow me to wear it into the arena. For me, it has always been a sign of good luck.
I get caught up in my thoughts until I hear the loud and annoying beeping, signaling that my bagel is ready. I grab the golden bagel from the tray sticking out of the wall. I glance to my right and notice a small and pathetic metal tray with a variety of cheeses and jams. I walk over and grab some cream cheese. I smother it over the bagel and it all smells absolutely delicious. Back in district two, we never really got quality food, but hey... who am I one to complain when district 11 and 12 barely get fed at all.
I put my stuff in a thin brown bag and run out of the bare room. I try to remember which way I came from. I must have taken at least ten minutes by now and Alex is gonna be pissed at me for taking so long, especially after he saw me sprinting away like that.
I nearly trip while running at top speed around a corner to my left. I hope I am going the right way. After about a minute of dogging corners and randomly choosing a path to follow, I find a pissed off Alex. He is glaring at his watch in frustration.
I walk over and tap him on the shoulder. He looks up and glares at me. "Come on, we are already 27 minutes late and I dont want a bad reputation as a mentor." I shrug but follow him down the long winding hallway. It is a miracle anyone can find stuff these days. I really wish I could take a map with me because I dont want a trip to the bathroom to be a 40 minute excursion.
Alex approaches a keypad with a variety of numbers and letters. He types in a random code that seems nearly impossible to memorise. A metal door on the wall behind me swings open with ease. I turn around in suprise because I had hardly noticed that the metal barriar had been there in the first place. How does someone miss something like that?!
Alex continues through the door without beckoning or motioning towards me. I decide on following him as briskly as I can, not wanting to anger him any further. I see a bright light down the hall. I have to squint my eyes a little bit because of the light, but overall it is bearable. I see a group of teenagers all standing in a group around someone in a skimpy black workout suit. She must be the one giving instructions for the training center.
Alex never actually told me we were coming here but from what I see, a vast variety of swords, knives, and other weapons, I could pretty much infer on my own that this is the training center. I join the rest of the tributes giving my mentor a nod of my head before he dissapears into the long hallway once again. I grab my steaming bagel out of the bag and take a huge bite. Some of the other tributes glance my way and stare longingly at my toasted delicacy. There is a black lady on a large grey pedestal talking.
"Many people dont die from there wounds. They die from natural causes such as sickness, starvation, or even thirst." The instructor says.
Someone from the audience of tributes groans and mutters "Come on, hurry it up!"
The instructor, with a nametag that reads Michone, stops in mid sentence "excuse me?" Michone asks, clearly pissed off.
"This stuff is boring as hell." the guy exclaims.
"Whats your name?"
"Jordan, and why do you care?"
"Well Jordan, please come up here. I would like to do a demonstration."
The young boy, who cant be much older then I am, looks furious. I definitely don't want to piss off this guy in the arena. Jordan steps onto the platform, not really bothering to use the steps and he faces Michone with no fear.
She grabs his arm and flips him on to the concrete ground. I her the sickening crack if his spine and Jordan screams in pain. Two of the Avox's run over immediately to help him. He stands up and cracks both of his muscles. I see a glare in his eyes that is not an uncommon feeling, hate
