We hear the sound of waves crashing against a shore so we decide to head in that direction. We are in need of some food and I could possibly snag some fish. I explain my thought to Jerome Ashleigh and Danielle. They happily agree. I begin to feel the soft sand underneath my black sneakers. My excitement gets the best of me and I sprint ahead to see a great mass of water. I smell the fresh salt in the air. I lean my head back and close my eyes, it reminds me of the time my dad took me fishing and I caught a huge Salmon.
"Guys c'mon!" I scream back at the rest of the group. They hurry to catch up with me.
"Mitch, Im going to go scout the area." Ashleigh announces.
Jerome states he is going to go with her as protection and I nod my head. It would be bad if we set camp up here and someone managed to sneak up on us in the middle of the night.
Danielle sits in the sand and begins to do a small hole. I don't question the childish behavior even though she should be doing something more productive. If she doesn't make it, might as well let her enjoy this. Tears begin to form in my eyes as I think of all the children who will be and have been murdered. The games are cruel and I wish I wasn't here. But anyways.. Better me then Connor. He wouldn't stand any chance. He hasn't begun his training yet and I don't expect him to for another one or two years.
I begin to shuffle through the pack I have, grabbing some beef jerky. I call Danielle's name and toss her a piece. She catches it and we both eat in silence.
After a few more minutes, Jerome and Ashleigh return.
"Mitch we didn't see any people but we did spot what looked like a ship." Jerome explains.
This catches my attention. A ship would be great cover and easy to defend. The sun is high in the sky so it must be a little after noon. I put everything I had taken back into the bag and begin heading in the direction with Jerome leading us.
I begin to see a big wooden speck in the distance. It's not too far out and I could easily swim to it. After another 20 minutes of walking, it is right in front of us. All I have to do is swim maybe 20 yards in a straight line forward and I would be there.
"Guys, here is the plan, you will give me everything because I am the best swimmer here. Once I'm about halfway there, start swimming out after me. If there is a current you get dragged in just swim parallel to the shore and call my name. I will come to help you."
Everyone nods their heads in understanding and they give me a total of two more packs, and three different weapons. I grip the knife between my teeth and put the others inside a bag. I have two hanging from my left shoulder and one on my right.
I drive into the water, then float to the top. I begin swimming towards the boat, keeping my eyes on the wooden vessel so I don't loose my sense of direction. I have covered about 12 yards when a bag begins to slip. It falls down to my elbow and I have to pause to readjust it. I begin to sink downwards and hurriedly adjust it because I'm beginning to feel short of breath. I explode from the surface again and continue swimming forward. Finally I feel my hand wrap around a wooden pole. I look up and see the boat. I pull myself upwards and splay my exhausted body out on deck. My clothes are drenched but it's so hot out I couldn't care less. I lean the soaking bags against the edge of the ship and shut my eyes.
I hear someone climbing against the edge of the boat and I immediately snap upward. All I see is Jerome climbing with Danielle shortly behind him. I give him a hug. And he begins to rummage through his bag. Danielle gets onboard and I mutter a quick good job.
I don't see Ashleigh but she can't be much further behind them. I sit down and chat with Jerome about our next strategy but my concern begins to surface after another five minutes pass. I get up and lean over the edge of the ship frantically searching the water for a blonde haired girl.
That's when I hear the screams. "Mitch!"
