"Devin are we there yet?" Karmo asked for the seventh time, I rolled my eyes at him.
"No we're not, so calm down!" I said. Elda growled as well and Karmo shut up. We were in a carriage on the way to Trunswick. We had just started passing through a dense forest just before Trunswick.
I stared out the window at the passing foliage and started to think about Diana. The sly orphan from Amaya had still stuck in my mind even after two years. Her black hair and brilliant blue eyes would always creep into my mind every time I started daydreaming.
I was snapped out of my reverie when the carriage came to an abrupt halt. I got out of the carriage and narrowly missed an arrow heading towards my head. A Conqueror had shot the arrow, it's spirit animal a bear, beside her.
I took out my sword and Elda leaped out of the carriage next to me. That's when a couple more Conquerors came out of the forest. A raccoon, an Euran snake, and a giant spider were just a few of the animals I spotted in the crowd of Conquerors. I was about to tell them to stand down when a loud yowl echoed in the forest.
A Greencloak girl stood silhouetted against the sun, a black panther next to her. A long greencloak flowed in the wind behind her and a sword and a bow at her side. A hood and a green mask covered her face except for her eyes, a brilliant bright blue. She spoke in a sly voice.
"Am I late for the party?" She put her hands on her hips. "Or is it just getting started?" A Conqueror shot an arrow at her chest and she leaned back as the arrow whizzed right by her face.
The Conquerors charged her but she avoided them effortlessly. Each Conqueror fought as hard as they could to no avail. Even the spirit animals who they fought fell easily.
The girl and her spirit animal fought in tandem. Each animal they defeated had this strange aura around them for a second and then they ran from their Conquerors. I was so engrossed by the battle unfolding around me, that I could barely register a Conqueror running towards me, his sword pointed towards my heart.
A blur of green and a clash of steel snapped me back from my reverie. The Conqueror's sword was blocked with the Greencloak girl's, and she was struggling to keep his sword away from me.
"I don't suppose you could help me after I just saved your life." She said, her blue eyes staring at me. I took out my one handed axe and swung it into the Conquerors shoulder. The Greencloak dispatched the rest of the Conquerors and their spirit animals before finally turning to me.
"Well you now owe me one." She said, pointing at me. I was taken aback by that statement.
"I'm a lord. If anything you owe me for being..." I started but was stopped by a fit of giggles coming from the Greencloak girl. The masked girl was laughing at me, as if I amused her in some way.
"What's so funny?" I asked her.
"Nothing, Devin Trunswick. I'm laughing cause of irony reasons." She said.
"Strange. You know me but I don't know who you are." I inquired. She was quiet for a little bit, before walking up to me. When she stopped, we were practically inches apart, and I could almost feel myself blushing. She looked me up and down, before her brilliant blue eyes finally bored into mine.
"Maybe it's best to keep it that way." She said, tapping my lips and moving away from me. Her panther was sniffing Elda, and the Greencloak girl looked at her spirit animal.
"Come on Jinx." The panther moved away from Elda with one last glance back at her. "Our work here is pretty much done." The Greencloak said before walking away, her panther next to her.
I watched her go. That voice and that laugh, they all seemed familiar. Most importantly, her eyes. I'd seen them somewhere before and with my luck, I'll never forget them.
Karmo got out of the carriage. He started talking to me in a hushed voice, which was very strange for him.
"You do know who that is right, Devin?" I merely nodded, before talking again.
"No I don't know. Who was she?" I asked Karmo and Karmo's eyes widened.
"That's the Keeper of Greenhaven. The Greencloaks newest and most dangerous recruit." He said, his voice returning to normal. His spirit animal landed on his shoulder and Elda cane back up to me. We continued talking with each other as we got back into the carriage.
I looked back at the forest where I last saw the Keeper. Now her eyes would be something I wouldn't forget. You know, a Conqueror has to study the enemy after all. And I had a feeling I'd be meeting her again, very soon.
