"Listen here Keeper, I'm running the mission this time. Here's the last rundown before you run off to battle." Mustela said. I nodded as he continued, listening carefully. We were standing at the docks at Eura, hunting down another talisman. If I didn't know any better, I always seem to drawn to Eura.
"Briggan's Silver Wolf talisman is here, but you need to be careful. Something's different this time. Lenori didn't see an enslaved animal in her vision; she saw a boy wrapped in shadows. I wonder what that could mean?" Mustela briefed me. I was curious, a boy wrapped in shadows? Maybe it was a Conqueror boy? In that case, why was I having visions of Devin? It made no sense.
"Ok. See you later Mustela!" I said and I waved to Mustela. I jumped from the docks to the path leading to the forest. I moved my mask and hood to cover my face. I released Jinx and we both raced into the forest.
We easily dispatched the enslaved animals before coming to a cave where Lenori said her vision started. My visions would start here too. I found that to be more than a coincidence. I exchanged an uneasy look with Jinx and we slowly walked into the cave.
When we exited the cave, we found ourselves in an arena surrounded by water. Huge, towering rocks stood in circles around the arena, silent guardians to the talisman. It had started to rain, making visibility a bit of a problem for me. I pulled out my sword and Jinx growled, her hackles rising.
I heard a loud yowl and a black panther came out of nowhere and pounced on Jinx. They both rolled out of my view and I could still hear fighting. I moved to go help Jinx, when a sword nearly took off my ear. I intercepted the sword, locked it with my own and faced my attacker. My eyes widened as it was none other than Devin Trunswick.
"Hello Keeper. Did you miss me?" He snarled.
"Devin?" I asked in disbelief. He was the boy wrapped in shadows. Ninnani wasn't sending me visions about Briggan's talisman; she was sending me visions about my future battle with Devin.
In my moment of hesitation, Devin shoved me backwards. I stumbled back and fell. I looked behind me to see Jinx, bloodied and beaten, but still fighting Elda. She roared at Elda, who roared right back before they started another vicious attack on each other.
I swiped Devin's feet out from under him, and tried to scramble away. He grabbed my foot and I fell into the mud once again. I reached for my sword, but Devin kicked it away. I turned around, just as Devin pinned me to the ground. I tried stealing his blade but he grabbed both of my hands and with one hand, held them above my head to the ground. I squirmed, trying to get out from under him to no avail.
"Well. Got you now, you sly fox." Devin said. I tried moving and fighting but didn't get anywhere. I called on Jinx, but she was pre-occupied with fighting off Elda.
"Guess it's time to see who you really are!" He said, taking off my hood. He reached for my mask and I fought so hard to keep the mask on. Devin finally got my mask and ripped it off.
"No." He stumbled up and back. I sat up, and we both just stared at each other. "Diana... You're... You're the Keeper." He said in disbelief his eyes wide with surprise. I got up and grabbed my sword. I looked back at him, his blue eyes still in shock.
"I didn't want to tell you Devin. I didn't want to hurt you. I'm sorry." I stood up and started walking away from him towards the talisman. That's when a blinding pain hit me. I looked back and a dagger was lodged in my shoulder. I grabbed my shoulder and my hand came back sticky and red with blood. I fell to my knees as the pain flashed through my head.
"You were a Greencloak all along. You lied about your life to me." Devin yelled. He grabbed the knife and yanked it out. I screamed out in pain, tears stinging my eyes.
"Devin I didn't lie-." I started saying before he cut me off. He put his sword against my throat and yelled two words that echoed through my core.
"LIAR!" He shouted, he hesitated and shook with rage. "TRAITOR!" I grabbed my sword from the ground. I sobbed silently but summed up any courage I had left and fought him.
Our swords bit and clawed at each other as we fought. Steel echoed through the arena along with the yowls and roars of our spirit animals. Devin and I locked swords and fought for leverage. His face was a mixture of rage and madness, while I could feel tears rolling down my face and sadness in my heart as I fought him. I pushed one last time and Devin's sword flew out of his hand.
He fell backwards and I pointed my sword at his throat. Meanwhile, Jinx had pinned Elda on her back with her paw and snarled at Elda. I could finish Devin right now and my troubles would be over. But I had a flashback then.
The two of us laughing together and him giving me the locket and bracelet. Him comforting me when I cried for my sister. How much I realized I loved him when I met him again.
I put down my blade and called Jinx to me. I grabbed the talisman and put it around my neck. I started walking away when Devin started shouting at me.
"Come back and face me! Come back and fight Devin Trunswick!" I looked back at him sadly and I ripped off his bracelet. I looked at the bracelet and spoke again.
"No you're not Devin. Not my Devin." I said sadly. I dropped the bracelet as the rain started pouring harder. I walked out of the arena, out of the cave, and out of the forest. Everything just blurred around me, even when Mustela ushered me back on the boat.
I just stared out to the ocean as we left Eura. The rain was really coming down now. Jinx nudged my hand and I stroked her. I fell to my knees and cried silently, the rain mixing with my tears.
