Fire. It was everywhere. Red hot flames, burning the cavern walls. Scorching Worthy's dead body. I walked towards him and turned the Redcloak over. His face was Devin's, now melting in front of me. He grabbed my arm.
"Why did you kill me? You're a monster Diana, you always will be!" I looked into his yellow slitted eyes and a monster looked back. I screamed.
I sat up and looked around. The cave wasn't scorched. Worthy wasn't dead. There was no fire. It was just a dream, a nightmare. I put my head down and tried to go back to sleep. It was quiet. Perfect time for me to get more shut eye. Too quiet. There was no sound at all. That when I took another look at the campsite.
Wrecked with Worthy's pack shredded on the ground. He was gone. I released Jinx and called out for him.
"Worthy? Worthy!? Worthy where are you?!" I looked down and my eyes widened as I see a trail leading away into the dark. Like someone was being dragged away into the tunnel nearest us. I grabbed my pack and motioned for Jinx to follow me. We ran into the tunnel following the trail.
I kept my eyes on the ground following the tunnel. The corrupted animals seemed to lessen the fresher the trail became. In fact, I was so focused on where the trail led, that I looked up in time just to see a tail belonging to a stinger hit me in the forehead.
I was thrown backward from the impact. Jinx ran to me and checked on me. I petted her to tell her I was ok and sat up. What had hit me was a large scorpion the size of a carriage. Its pincers the size of Jinx and it's eyes each the size of my head.
"Ew. You are one ugly excuse for a scorpion." I sniffed the air. "You stink too." I waved my hand in front of my face to get rid of the smell. It charged, its pincers clapping menacingly. I rolled out of the way just in time for the stinger to hit the ground where I once was.
Jinx roared and ran around the huge scorpion, distracting it. I found an opening and grabbed the tail, letting it lift me to the rest of the body. I took out my sword and slashed at it with one hand while the other held onto the tail. I had a bit of trouble as it was trying to get Jinx at the same time I was slashing at it.
I called on Jinx's power so that way I could get this battle over with, but Jinx disappeared and the scorpion now focused on me. The tail swung around as Jinx's power faded from me and I held on for dear life. One violent movement from the tail flung me halfway across the cavern into a lake. Lucky for me the lake was shallow; Unlucky me, my sword was flung to the other side of the battlefield.
"Excuse me! Little help here!" A voice shouted. I looked around until I saw a certain Redcloak laying on the floor. He was wrapped in sticky spider silk and seemed immobilized except for his head. "I don't suppose you could help me before it gets here." I got out of the lake and ran over to him. The scorpion was occupied as Jinx had returned from passive state and fought the scorpion.
"So let me guess, you were dragged away by a giant scorpion." I said, in a matter of fact tone.
"Yes. Long story involves a huge scorpion and a larger than life spider which I hope I never see again. I'll tell you all about it once you get me out of here!" He shouted. I reached for my dagger in my shoes and managed to pull it out halfway before a giant claw grabbed me by my other hand and lifted me up into the air. Jinx, who was exhausted, jumped into passive form and the other claw picked up Worthy as he struggled. We were the equivalent of done for... Unless.
"HEY UGLY! Ever hear of a knife throwing contest?" I shouted. That got its attention and all of its eyes looked straight at me. Perfect. "Thanks for giving me a good target." I kicked my foot back, the dagger in my boots shot into the air. My other hand grabbed it in midair and in one swift motion, threw the dagger right between its eyes.
The scorpion released us and howled loudly in pain. It began to shrink the more it howled, until it shrunk to the size of a pin. It hung suspended in the air then dropped to the ground with a quiet pfft. It ran off and dug itself into the sand.
"Well, that was anticlimactic." I walked over to Worthy, cut him out of the cocoon, and helped him up. "You ok?" I asked him. He looked at me and ran his hand through his hair, his hood had fallen off when the scorpion picked him up.
"Arax's Wool- that thing was huge! I thought I was dead for sure." He spoke still surprised and he turned to me. He hugged me. "Keeper. I owe you my life. If you hadn't..."
Worthy then realizes he's hugging me, lets go and speaks again a little sheepishly.
"Thank you. I hope I can repay this someday." I just laughed and called Jinx out of passive state.
"Come on. We still have a lot more to go." I grabbed my pack and Worthy went over and retrieved my sword as we walked into the next tunnel.
