When the Sky Falls (A One Direction fanfiction)

Chapter 1- Out on the Town

Mae's Point Of View: 

I walked through the town square snowflakes drifting in circles with the icy winter breeze. Christmas was my favourite time of year.

I stared into one of the shops with rows and rows of laptops and computers, just more things I could never have. In my reflection I saw a girl wearing a woolly maroon dress and beanie and a black scarf and black stockings to match.

She had wavy chestnut brown hair twisting all the way down to her back and she stared back at me with golden brown eyes.

 I worked part-time at the technology store where they sold just about every electronic thing possible, but everything I earned went towards helping my brother, Noah.

 I muffled my face with my fingerless gloves to warm my cheeks and just stood there my face in my hands, from other people's views it probably looked like I was crying.

 But I didn't care I just stood their enjoying the cold chill that ran up my spine every time a gust of wind hit my back. I had come here to buy Noah a present, even though it would probably mean sacrificing a few essentials, he deserved a Christmas gift this year.

It had been so different since my best friend had left for the X-Factor, without him I was struggling not to drown in my problems. We had always kept in touch but I didn't want to worry him about Noah.

Or how Noah had gotten worse.

But lately we had been talking less and less because I was constantly working or studying and he was busy making music for thousands of fans.

Being in a band meant that there were heaps of girls drooling all over him so we decided to keep our close friendship a secret so I wouldn't have the press or fans badgering me.

 He had been my best friend ever since the first day of preschool (I had let him borrow my crayons). I missed him so much I don't know how I had survived so long without him.

 He loved Christmas too.

 I smiled as I looked over to the huge Christmas tree lighting up the square. We used to visit it every Christmas Eve together... we would sneak out late at night and watch the lights till it finally became Christmas.

Red and green lights flashed on the happy faces below making them look strange and alien.

Then I saw him, I could never mistake that mess of blonde hair.
