LEHJA : WAY OF SPEAKING
Misunderstanding can get you very far down the rabbit hole than you can ever expect it to.
And misunderstanding was all that I had ever done in life, so look out Alice, I'm coming down there to take over Wonderland.
When I had stayed at home on Saturday and hung out with Noor for a while, I had secretly been happy that I had managed to avoid going to the 'Popular Group's' party yet again this year.
But what I had misunderstood, and well, totally forgot, was the fact that Summer Vacations weren't due another week. So technically, the party was going to be hosted this week's Saturday. So all my hope for having it already been done and over with had gone down the drain.
And to top it all off, on Thursday, Noor had surprisingly shown the desire to go to it.
Like Noor, of all people.
"Are you on drugs or something?" I whispered to her in our Islamic and Pakistan Studies class. The notes lay sprawled across my desk while varieties of colored stationery surrounded them.
"Of course not, you idiot. I'm just saying that we should go this year. Like, come on. We're gonna get jobs and move on with our boring lives after this. Don't you wanna know how those parties are like? Aren't you even a little bit curious?"
"I already know what their parties are like. We're not gonna sit around in a circle while playing Telephone. There are drugs, alcohol, and vulgarity there, Noor. And you are very well aware of that fact. There is no shame and respect there. What they do is *haram, Noor."
Our quiet bantering was cut off by the teacher who banged a hand on her desk to make sneaky chatterers like us quiet. Then she went back to her writing on the board.
"I'd rather not. Even if it were a simple normal party, I wouldn't have either. 'Cause you know, I could be social, or I could read." I looked at her pointedly trying to joke.
"I'm gonna read. And so are you, because we are not going to that party."
"I know. But I might have accidentally slipped up about the party to mummy yesterday and she's now forcing me to attend. And you know I can't survive without you anywhere."
That was the difference between Noor and her mother. While Noor was shy, her mother was quite the modern woman who would force her daughter to go to social events and well, be social. She didn't mind those types of environments for her daughter unless Noor herself did those things. Which she was pretty much sure Noor would never.
I sighed. "You know I can't, Noor. I'm never gonna get the permission to that. My parents will kill me before they let me go there. And quite frankly, I'll kill myself before I step in that type of environment. It's not our place."
"Fareeha's gonna be there. She knows all the ins and outs. She'll keep us safe."
"What has gotten into you?"
"I just wanna attend a party with you. That's all!"
We both sighed. "Just give it a thought and tell me later." She finished tiredly.
Even though I gave her a curt nod, I knew there was no way in hell I was ever going to go there. And there was no way I was gonna let her go either.
This was so not Noor. Going to a party? It was beyond my understanding of how she even gave the idea a thought! Her mother forced her into these things, but she mostly found a way out of them. So what was the matter this time?
